Hi Bernard
I was browsing through your question and answer section and noticed that your response to the question about confederate statues in Virginia was word for word the same as the conclusion I reached when discussing the issue with my daughter Katy.
The germ of an idea crossed my mind that perhaps I have enjoyed your books so much and find the way you express yourself so satisfying, partly because of a sense of like-mindedness.
I have always perceived you as a down to earth soul, who would be good company in the local pub and there is a comfort and familiarity about your views, particularly in relation to (some?) clergymen and lawyers.
When such characters feature in one of your books the reader knows what is coming and can settle down, pull the pages around themselves, like a comfortable blanket and enjoy the fun.
As I have done for many years.
All the best
Brian

Just finished The Flame Bearer. Loved every book in the series! Also loved The Last Kingdom on TV. Next, major feature film?

Thank you! I’ll look for the inspiration!
I'm not contacting you to ask for anything, other than to ask you to keep doing what you do! I'm a massive fan of Uhtred (and co) and I really enjoyed 1356 as well. I am just about to order Flame Bearer now. Unfortunately I don't get (make?) much time to read, so at the moment you are writing them faster than I am reading them! I don't think I can hold that against you though, can I?
Thanks again and best wishes,
Paul.
I want to tell you that you are a fine writer. Every book of yours that I've read has excellent grammar, style, and plot development. I have read many books by British authors, many of them written about WWII, and I feel that the teaching of grammar, composition, and literature in English schools must be very good. Maybe it was better pre-1070s? I have read mostly works about WWII experiences (The Burma Road), etc. I hope you live long and write more books. Thank you!

Hi again,
I decided to follow Stonehenge with The Last Kingdom.....most disappointed to find that my audiobook company only has the abridged copies of the series.....and I ask you or any other avid reader....what is the point of abridged audiobooks? I accidentally chose an abridged copy of Copperhead and when I realised, I just started it again....abridged books seem like a pointless exercise and a very poor second best! I would prefer not to read a book than choose this.
Rant over!!
Regards
Danny
Dear Bernard,
even though I don`t want to put pressure on you I want to make sure you keep on writing. I am looking forward to reading the novel which follows the flame bearer. I know I should not be so impatient but it is like it is.
So don`t take my message too serious ;-)
Best wishes of a true fan from Germany,
Stefan
Hi, my names Nathan Bridle and I wanted to contact you to say thank you and shower you with praise. I need to start by stating that I've never been a fan of reading, ever since a young age it was something that never really caught my attention, despite being a prolific little writer at the time. I think it may have been when the Harry potter books first came out and someone bought me the original trilogy as a gift, that I realised that I just didn't enjoy reading. Years and years went by and I found myself watching tv or playing games to cure my boredom, that is until I discovered game of thrones. I started and found I couldn't stop reading. Obviously I watch and enjoy the show but it lacks what the books could deliver, once i had finished the series I went back to beginning and started again and when I finished the second time I suddenly realised that there was a void that needed filling. So naturally I read his other work an enjoyed it all. But then the void returned and I had no idea what to read next. I read a few stories but they all lacked something, that was until I read John Gwynnes 'Faithful and Fallen' series which I thoroughly enjoyed the 3 times I read it through. And then I discovered the last kingdom. I'd seen the series on Netflix and I have to say I really enjoyed it. Someone mentioned to me that it was based on your books. I'd obviously heard of your name before from fans of the Sharpe series and never thought to see what else you had written. I just wanted to say that this series of books is by far my favourite series ever. I've literally just got back from buying 'the empty throne' and I just can't wait to get home and make a start. I'm enjoying the series so much that I've been pushing them onto all my friends and family urging them to read. I guess I just wanted to say thank you for the stories, and thank you again for inspiring me to pick up my pen again. I recently read the article on your page for new writers and I actually did what you recommended (except I did it with the last kingdom, replacing uhtred with my protagonist) and I now feel so much more comfortable when I write. So thank you again for your work it's been a joy and an inspiration to me.
Keep up the excellent work
Many thanks
Nathan
Best of luck with your writing Nathan!
I just wanted to let you know how much I have enjoyed your books. I have read most of them, working on all of them, and am always on the lookout for a new title. I just finished WATERLOO and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Thank you for sharing your gift.

Hi again Bernard,
Just finished Stonehenge
What can I say, other than awesome!!....my favourite of your books yet (except for Sharpe)
History, science, religion, romance, suffering, determination, violence, insanity, chivalry....this book had it all in a beautifully descriptive and immensely imaginative but believable story....well done!!
Regards
Danny
