English History was always my favourite subject at school but it had been over 50 years since then. I love reading all sorts of subjects but most prefer stories with historical leanings. Never having read any of you books until last year I picked up a Sharpe book in a charity shop (sorry about that). Then being given a Kindle I started at the first book and read the whole series back to back and was enthralled. Then followed up with the Starbuck Chronicles. Would have been a Grey ghost myself. Now on fifth book of The Last Kingdom. Brilliant stories, brilliant plots, superbly written. Thank you..

Hi Bernard
I just wanted to say thank you for all of your books over the years. They have been my constant companion through all of lifes ups and downs and I have to sometimes the only thing that have kept me sane 😁 Any way as I say I just wanted to thank you - I never did with Terry Pratchett another of my favourite authors and someone who is greatly missed - and I feel you guys give so much pleasure to so many you should be thanked. That is my real name by the way 😊

Dear Bernard
I enjoy reading your books the Saxon series. I find that I can read one of your books within three days because they are so enjoyable. I’m up to The Empty Throne and will be picking that up this weekend. I think you are an extremely talented writer that describes the entire scene and that is what draws me into these books. It would be a pleasure shaking your hand and if you sign books in the U.S please post it on your website.
Thank you for your time
Michael Morin
Thank you! Should there be a book signing in the US, it will be posted on the homepage - promise!
Just finished your book Waterloo- a Christmas present. Thank you for making an epic event easier to understand. For some considerable time- since reading your Sharpe novels (have all the books and DVD's of the TV series) -I have made a study of the Napoleonic Wars; especially in the Peninsular and on to Waterloo!
Clearly with the latter.- after the event- everyone wanted to be part of the story whether they were there or not! After the fog of war the fog of memory? Your account has for me, lifted that fog and allowed me to see the battle(s) and the personalities with greater clarity. Thank you As a footnote I was intrigued at the reproduction of the painting by Richard Ansdell entitled The fight for the Standard - why? Well my address is 42 Fylde Rd Ansdell Lytham St Annes.. Ansdell made his home here amongst the sand dunes here (there wasn't much else back then) so he could paint in peace. The cottage he lived in is marked by a Blue Plaque!
Once again my sincere thanks - and congratulations- for your book Waterloo.

Dear Bernard,
I wanted to write to tell you how much I am enjoying The Last Kingdom novels. As a boy (a long time ago now!) I enjoyed the Henry Treece books about the Vikings and reading yours now is such a pleasure. I can barely put them down - Uhtred is a bit of a rascal but a likable one and a great protagonist!Incidentally, one thing that attracted me to these stories - I am a Wiltshireman and come from Edington originally, where my parents still live. I know Bratton camp and the hills around well, indeed spent my childhood walking across them. I have some close friends whose house at the foot of Bratton hill is called "Danes Lye"!
I am onto Sword song now .. and will be sad when I finish this series of books,
All the very best,
Alastair
I have been reading your novels lately. Completed Sharpes, Grail, Arthur and amazing Saxon Stories. Just wished to express my gratitude for your contribution to my life.
Thank you.

Loved Empty Throne. And just read Sharpe's Fury. Masterson, the sergeant who got the Eagle had a descendant distinguished in the Boer War, apparently.
I was reminded of the Tenth Lord Dundonald, of the Napoleonic era. And a bit from Kipling covering the Boer War. "Lord Dundonald's galloping pom-poms ate up their weight of shell in three minutes." That's why we recall The Master and not the guy who said that quick-firing guns were hard to supply.
Also, it's another Lord Dundonald, call it seventy years later. Maybe eighty. Great grandson, perhaps.
My father's division (104th ID Timberwolves) were first in the Canadian Corps in Holland under Montgomery with the British army. My dad met a lot of Brits, Aussies and Canadians, and Polish tankers. He was interested in the Brits and their empire. Until they ran out, I used to print off the Telegraph UK obits of various vets for him. I found a not uncommon term, "Old military family".
Interesting phenomenon.

Dear Mr Cornwell -
A few weeks ago I watched the BBC series The Last Kingdom. I have never read one of your books even though I was a school librarian. For this I must apologise. I was hooked when I watched the series and I bought the first book in the series and just carried on reading and have now just finished Sword Song. I went to Waterstones Bookshop today and bought the next three after Sword Song. They are mesmerising, so well written and so so exciting. Your characters are so perfectly written I see every one in my imagination.
I just wanted to thank you for such a fabulous series of books. My husband, I think, is enjoying the quiet!!
Kind regards
Maggie Mackenzie
