I am reading SARUM by Rutherford. Thankfully i've read up to and including DEATH OF KINGS. So I have lots of background info on King Alfred.

Dear Mr Cornwell, I have no question for you, I just wanted to thank you for your books. I'm living in Germany and much of the historical fiction which is published here is basically women heroes doing in the middle ages what a modern woman would do, but not a real woman from the middle ages. So I looked for something with a more real feel, not because I like the world to be a man's world, but because it definitely was one in the centuries you describe in your books (and still is in most parts of the world). And I wasn't disappointed when I found your books. I've read "Azincourt" (my first 'Cornwell') and the first four of your Saxon Stories so far, and I'll continue with the Arthur and the Grail stories after the fifth Uhtred which will be my reading for the next week. Also the first Sharpe is already on my shelf. Keep up the good work and thank you for all these wonderful reading hours! Regards Karl-Heinz Meurer

Mr. Cornwell, I discovered your work, thus far the Saxon Stories, after reading your exchange w/ George R.R. Martin. What a great idea that was to publish! I'm very much enjoying reading the imagined interactions between your kinsman Uhtred and mine, King Alfred. (from an illegitimate and distaff descent, more's the pity... I had to pay to tour Westminster, unlike my more "connected" cousin's recent and world-famous appearance there). I'm thrilled to have a nice catalog of new material to enjoy, thanks for your work, and please keep it up! Mike Nancarrow

Hi Mr. Cornwell. In your answer to a March 4th letter from Geraint, you mentioned that you were considering having Starbuck present for the 54th Massachusetts assault on Fort Wagner, SC. Since this assault took place on July 18th, 1863, it would probably preclude Starbuck from being at Gettysburg, which was only two weeks before. Fort Wagner would make a good story, but if its a choice between that and Starbuck at Gettysburg, it's no contest: have him at Gettysburg. Alan Kempner

That sounds like sound advice! Thank you!

Hello - I have read the first 5 Saxon Tales and am going to get my hands on the (new) 6th ASAP! Kudos to you - your books were recommended by a professor teaching early English history. I'm so very much impressed by your ability to meld research/history with a great plot and characters! You may find it amusing to know how much I (and many others, no doubt) identify with Uhtred. I am a 65-year-old woman who is under 5 feet 2 inches, so I don't always get quite the respect that Uhtred commands, but reading about him has somehow given me a more powerful sense of self - I found myself snarling at a man who thought I should get out of his way at the grocery store (what happened to Old Ladies First???) and afterward realized I'd been "channeling" Uhtred. Probably the subconscious of most of us would like to go around with a long sword plus a short one, to threaten or murder anyone who got in our way! So keep those Uhtred books coming! (Thank you!)BTW, I realize that Osburn is a "Viking" name.

Oh well done! Uhtred would be proud of you! And what did happen to Old Ladies First? Or even Ladies First? I held the door open for a woman not long ago and she Uhtreded me, I suppose I offended her feminist convictions, which is fine for her, but confusing for us. On a quite different matter I came across a Noel Coward quote the other day which made me laugh; 'I always prefer to travel on Italian ships, there's none of that 'women and children first' nonsense.' Thanks!

Dear Mr. Cornwell, It was by pure chance that I came across The Saxon Stories, I mean how often do you think 16 year old girls read your books? Ever since the first book I read Ive been hooked! Ive read all the Grail Quest Series, all The Saxon Stories, Stonehenge, and all The Warlord Chronicles. I seem to have read them as obsessively as a typical rabid teenage girl. I just recently finished Excalibur, and I tell my friends everything that happens in your delightful books, though I seem to be the only one who finds them so excitable. I have noticed that most the women in your books die. So when I was telling them how sad the end of Excalibur was, I said it was because Ceinwyn got to live you killed everyone else! Perhaps Im the only one who finds that funny. But Im not criticizing the ending. If in your books everything was happily ever after they wouldnt be so good. But, anyhow, I just wanted to complement you on your works, they have ruled a whole year of my life, and that I will keep reading your novels, even the Sharpe ones- all 20-something. Im sorry I wrote such a long comment. Thank you for your time and for writing such great stories!
