Hi Bernard, Thank you so much for creating my favorite characters in literature. I just finished Death of Kings - Uhtred is the best! My kids (11 and 6) always know when I'm reading one of your books by my loud laughter echoing through the house (of course, I usually can't tell them WHY I'm laughing.) I am writing to you from just outside of Buffalo, New York and I wanted to let you know that Western New York and Southern Ontario will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 throughout this summer. If you have any interest in seeing the sights, such as Old Forte Niagara, I wanted to offer my assistance - I am a chef by trade and could be a resource for you on where to stay and/or eat. I understand if your schedule is booked, but I'd love to share a bit of my region's history and offer something back to you, who has entertained and informed me for so many years. Best Regards, Eric

That sounds like a great invitation, thank you - the only fly in that ointment being my commitment to the Monomoy Theatre all summer which will keep me firmly at home . . . I suspect it will even keep me from Waterloo in three years time.

I do not know if you will receive this. However, I just want you to know I am a huge fan of your work and only within the last two years. I am originally from Shropshire in the UK but moved to Canada when I was eleven. I stumbled upon the third book in the series of The Saxon Stories and being a history student in my last year of undergrad I figured I would give it a go as it is based in England. Well I loved it and have read all the books in that series since. I have recently started Sharpe's Tiger and like the Saxon Stories I am having trouble putting it down. I Just wanted to say thanks for the great work and one day I hope to write my own historical fiction that can capture a time period as well as yours can.

Thanks for answering my question about The Pale Horseman title relating to the Apocalypse--pretty naive of me--I kept looking for a pale horseman as I read in the book!! I find Your Questions and Bulletin Bd. fascinating reading; in fact, thanks to your mention of Bloodfeud: Murder and Revenge in Anglo-Saxon England,by Richard Fletcher, I have now ordered THAT!! However, I do pray that somehow YOUR Uhtred does NOT get killed!! I have lived vicariously in his victories, and have become so "attached" to him, I hope as I read on, that "our" Uhtred is A-OK. I was quite pained to read of the death of his little son. Thanks for fascinating reading, and for patiently answering me, again,--and you may be related to Otzi?!!! THAT's interesting! Elfreth

I just wanted to let you know how pleased I was to find out I have been selected to give away Harlequin for World Book Night 2012. I chose it because we all really enjoyed reading it ourselves and I'd love to share that enjoyment with others. Also my son (aged 11) is at Monkton Prep and looking forward to going to the Senior School like you, so we feel we also have some small connection! PS: now aged 55 I am in the third year of the six year part-time BA in English Literature at Bristol University. Living proof that a love of books lasts a lifetime. Jacqueline Burrows

Congratulations! Thanks - and have fun!

Q

Good morning I have just read "The Fort" and enjoyed it. I noticed that several times you refer to "the ensigns on the ships being flown". As a retired navy man I felt I could help you with the correct term without sounding pompous. Naval Ensigns are worn, never flown. I hope this helps for future reference. Regards, Barry Davis

A

In novels they're flown . . . . just to help the reader, but I take your point.

I recently broke my leg in a hiking accident, and as I was laid up at home this week...finding myself with a sudden abundance of free time on my hands...I decided to re-read the entire Saxon series, one book after another. I must say, the inconvenient nuisance (and dull pain) of a broken limb and utter boredom associated with diminished mobility was soon completely forgotten as I found myself immersed in the historical imagery you present in the time of Alfred the Great and the Danish quest for Wessex. I even found myself following Lord Uhtred's path, pinpointing the locations on a map of England. As I said, lots of time on my hands...but it was indeed time well spent. Thank you Mr. Cornwell, for taking me on a journey back in time. I patiently await Uhtred's next campaign!

Hope the leg is improving!

Hi, Just found you on FB and wanted to tell you from an (slightly) old Norse to another, as I think I read somewhere that you are also, that my family line in supposedly also descended from the Lothbrok brothers, Ivar and Halfdann. It's been alot of fun for me over the last 10 years or so helping my cousin in Florida who's done the genealogy part finding more history about them, which is my love. Then a friend gave us 6 of your books of this series and we're into the 2cd and just love your grasp of it all. If you've never heard of JamesDowAllen and his fabgenealogy, you should Google it, because he also has done a great job. That is not where my cousin got any of her info, but it is very interesting to see his good online display of the genealogy. We belong to the Charlemagne society; do you??? well, thanks again, Marge from Oregon.

Thank you - I shall look up the references. To my shame I've never heard of the Charlemagne Society, so I shall have to investigate that too.

Dear Mr Cornwell, Many thanks for writing such absorbing books.I had (and still do)enjoyed the Sharpe series on the telly, but had not read the books. My first was Azincourt and I was 'Hooked'. I'm now on the Grail Series, however, I read the last book first...but your stories are so well devised that this has not spoiled the the series for me...it must be all the Hooks in the stories. Thanks again for such exciting and interesting books. Trevor.

I just wanted to say that The Saxon Chronicles was my first attempt at reading historical fiction. I love history, but I was always scared mix the two. I must tell you that I loved the series. You did an amazing job. I am located in the southern US and I am a Christian. I thought the anti-Christian rhetoric was a tad bit but for the most part handled with care and I appreciated that. Not all the Christians were good or evil, they were people that suffered from being imperfect humans. I rarely every write an author. I just had to tell you what an outstanding job you did on the book series though. I can't wait for you to write more of Uhtred. I would hope that you would delve into fantasy in the future as there are so few good fantasy writers. Thanks.

Thank you. Thank you for many hours of blissful escape! Sharpe, Starbuck, the Saxons, Arthur, and the stand alone books too. As a veteran cop, it is great to be able to escape to the past. Your books are like a "movie in the mind". I am currently in the latest Saxon book! I am an ex-pat Brit too. Born in Belfast, emigrated in '66 with my folks as a child, live near Niagara Falls Ontario now. Again, thank you Sir, I have many many hours of enjoyment from your writings! Keep it up please. Nick McConnell.
