I'm in the middle of Sharp's Triumph and came upon your statements about mad hatters ("...no one knew why hatters were mad ..."). While you may know this, hatters would cure their felt in a mercury solution and size the hats by pulling them onto their own heads, over time absorbing enough through their scalps to develop toxic encephalopathy.

I had heard that, and thank you for reminding me! But Sharpe didn't know and I think I was trying to tell it from his point of view.

Happy New Year Mr C! Just finished Death of Kings, and what a brilliant read it was. As ever, my only issue was that it was all over to soon. Can't wait for the next one!

Q

HI Mr Cornwell, just finished reading Death of Kings and it it you mention a Viking chief being kicked out of Ireland by the Irish, odd thing is a work friend of mine is a metal detector enthusiast and at in November last year he found about 200 pieces of Viking Treasure which the experts believe belonged to The same Viking chief mentioned in your book, hows that for timing. Trivia I know but I couldn't get over the fact this Treasure has been in the Ground for over 1100 years and is found in a farmers field in Carnforth near where I live just at the same time as the guy who lost it is mentioned in one of your novels. If you want to read more about it just google viking treasure carnforth and it will come up.

Being a creative myself I have to bow to absolute creative brilliance - I have read several of your historical troubadour masterpieces. I do find the shitting in the mouth stuff completely vile - and if the stories didnt captivate me so much, they would have been relegated to the bin. Well bloody done - you are a complete genius who encapsulates the art of the historical war story masterfully. you capture the worlds priestly class to an absolute T. in your honor and as a creative furniture synapse, I have designed a Viking Norse table, after reading your pale horseman - the table is so designed to create an atmosphere where great food , sculpture and great conversation collide. Google - wildetects Viking table - inspired by the pale horseman - secondary creative inspiration - thank you for the brilliance - thank you for the creativity. And thank you for keeping it real history has become so much more well done. QJD - design studio - wildetect designer.

Dear Bernard Cornwell I am a huge fan of your work. I was never a big reader, but ever since I got my hands on Lords of the North, I won't lie I bought it cause the cover intrigued me and only read it cause I used it for a book report, I can't put your books down though now. I've read the grail quest, Aurthurs tales, and am right up to date with the Saxon tales. I thank you for opening up the world of books to me. I think you should try getting your books to a producer because I think they would make excellent movies. I hope to hear back from you Your faithful reader, Tom Carvagno

Thanks! I don't spend much time thinking about making movies from my books. If it happens, great! But I'm more interested in putting words on paper. Glad you like my books!

Q

This is a fan mail. I am in the process of devouring your books and wanted to tell you how much I am enjoying them. Have read all (so far) of the Saxon Chronicles; the King Arthur stories, the Archers Tale & co. These eras of history have always fascinated me and it is a pleasure to read such vibrant and well-crafted stories of those eras. Thank you

Peggy Bruno

Q

Good evening, Mr. Cornwell. Just dropping in to say that I've finished reading "Rebel," and must grudgingly put "Copperhead" on hold on account of "Death of Kings" coming out today in the U.S. Ah, what a happy dilemma. Anyway, I hope you had a great holiday and new year, and I wish to thank you (again) for such amazing prose and dialogue. Your work continues to impress me, and I am always thankful to know that I have yet more to cover. Best to you and your family in 2012, particularly good health and happiness!

Colin

Q

Hi Bernard, I'm a big fan of Uhtred - discovering him before I'd even heard of Sharpe, believe it or not. I have just started to read Death of Kings and it's like coming home. Thank you so much for all your hard work, it is very much appreciated! Are there plans for UK book tours/promo visits?

Andrew Climance

Bernard, Do you do any book tours e.g Waterstones in UK (London area)? I'm a big fan and would obviously love to get a signed copy of a novel of yours from the man himself. many thanks, Justin. p.s. god save Essex and god save Ireland

A

I was in the UK for a short time last year when Death of Kings was first published. Not sure when I'll be back, but check the Diary page on occasion as all appearances do get posted there.

Q

Hi Bernard, I believe the reader enquiring about a book set in Ethiopia is Wilbur Smith's 'Cry Wolf'; set around 1935 and the Italian invasion of that country. Regards. PS. Just finished 'Death Of Kings' and absolutely loved it.
