Your Questions

Q

Dear Mr. Cornwell, Just finished the India trilogy, and after watching Sharpe's Challenge, was thoroughly impressed with how the stories all had their best elements woven into the fabric of what must have been a difficult epic to shoot. In short - Bravo! Onto current day U.S.A - on BBC America last night, I saw a 10 second spot flash by during my recorded series premier of Doctor Who. It was a young man in armor firing a flaming arrow with the marker of "Coming in March". Might one assume (hopefully correctly), that the Grail Series has been produced and will air? Would love to see that series of books come to life in the same well produced manner as the Sharpe series. Thanks for books! Chris Geiser Staten Island, NY

A

The Grail series has not been produced - but it will be interesting to see what is coming in March!

I'm writing in relation to the young man firing an arrow question recently posted. It will be Robin Hood which is currently being shown on the bbc in the uk. A new version quite well told and done. Thanks Aaron

Q

Sir, Will the Sharpe's series ever be reissued in hardback form as a collection much as other popular authors' books have been in the past? I would very much like to see such a thing in the near future. My regards, Fred Marra

A

I guess that's a possibility - it's up to the publishers - but it's not likely to happen until the series is finished.

Q

Hello Bernard, Thank you so much for all your books! I have read virtually every thing you have written and thoroughly enjoyed everything I have read. Quick question: In Copperhead there is a French Chasseur, of mixed parentage French/English, who's Father was an English Rifleman, and was named for his fathers best friend and Irishman called Patrick. I forget but I'm sure there was more but anyway to the question, is he actually supposed to be Sharpe's son or is it just an in joke? Sam Allen

A

He is Sharpe's son.

Q

Hi, I've just finished reading Gallows Thief, as usuall a very good novel, it's one that you have to read again and again. Will Rider Sandman have other adventures to go on?many thanks. Rob Stewart

A

I'd like to write a follow-up to Gallows Thief, but I'm not sure when I'll find the time.

Q

How do you do it? Yet another wonderful book series. First there was Sharpe, then Warlord and Starbuck series. I have now completed the Grail series, the finest yet! I told my father I had no interest in reading a medieval book series, but under pressure I bought the first book, Harlequin. I was so impressed I had to buy the other two books immediately. Is there any possibility of adding more books to this series? I know the Grail quest is complete, but Thomas is still a young man and there are still many great battles to be fought in the Hundred Years war. Thank you once again! Simon

A

No more books will be added to the Grail Quest series, but another adventure for Thomas? I guess it's possible, but not likely to happen any time soon.

Q

dear Bernard, thank you for the hours of enjoyment that your books give me, especially the warlord trilogy and the Uhtred books. I wonder, will Uhtred make it to Bebbanburg? An achievement in those days,I know, but not impossible.

I would also like to know if you would ever consider writing about 1066 and all that? Especially about the flight of the thegns and siward barn to join the varangian guard. If not could you recommend somebody who has? Anthony Barry

A

Uhtred is still a long way from Bebbanburg, he won't get back up there till much later in the series.

It hasn't tempted me and, alas, I don't know of any novels on the period . . . . . sorry!

Q

Dear Sir, I was recently reading an interview with JK Rowling in which she had mentioned that when she writes about her famous characters she is not influenced by the young actors that portray them in the movies. Given the amount of references to the Sharpe's tv series that are included in the questions you so kindly answer on your website, I am compelled to ask... Is your inner eye influenced by Sean Bean? I confess myself a fan of your books first and like to think of him as portrayed on some of the earlier covers of the US editions (Sharpe's Enemy comes to mind). Thanks for the wonderful description of the picture drawn of him by the French soldier in Sharpe's Escape, I really enjoyed it. He was quite a sight. Also (and I apologize for going on).... Will you ever let us know what's become of Antonia? A short story perhaps? Is she bold and daring like her parents? I hate to think that the daughter of such characters would end up as some Spanaird's little wife having twelve children and keeping house. I am sure you have a clear picture in your mind of what her future was like.... Care to share? (one can only hope....) Thank you for answering my silly questions. Your are a wonderful storyteller. Elise

As a great female fan of the Sharpe books ( I have read them all several times and always avidly await the next one ) there is one thing that has always made me wonder: do you know what happened to Sharpe's daughter, the one he had with Teresa and left behind in Spain? This is the sort of thing which bothers us women! Ann McRae

A

I still see Sharpe as I first described him - black haired, scarred, etc, but I now hear Sean Bean's voice when I write him - an excellent choice for the role!

Actually I have no picture whatsoever, oh dear. Well, maybe a little. Perhaps a short story? Seems the likeliest solution (in real life Antonia has just had her first baby, thus making me a grandfather.)

Q

I was under the impression that Obadiah Hakeswill died when he went into the pit with the snakes at the conclusion of "Sharpe's Fortress", but he then surprisingly reappeared in "Sharpe's Company". What did I miss? I love the Sharpe series, and am attempting to read it in chronological sequence. I am now at "Sharpes Sword". The Grail Quest series was also great, and I read almost every book of yours I can find. Thanks for the great entertainment and education. Phil Patchett

I love your Sharpe books, but something is puzzling me. I thought Obediah Hakewsill dies in India. But I see that he shows up later in the Share series? Leo Sacco

A

The snakes wouldn't touch him! He survived. He couldn't be killed (says so in the scriptures). If you were a snake, would you bite him?

Q

Would like to acquire Sharpe DVD's with subtitles &/or sound in Spanish language and /or Portuguese language. Does such a critter exist? Where? If not, any imminent plans for same? Thank you /WES

A

I'm afraid it does not exist - at least not at this time. If that changes, we'll post the information to this website.

Q

Hello, After reading all of the current "Saxon Stories", I thirsted for more and turned to the "Arthur Books". I noticed that you left Excalibur off to where there was the possibility of yet another book based on Derfel. While I won't hold my breath that another one of that series would be written, have you ever entertained the thought?
Steve in California

A

I won't continue Derfel's story, the Arthurian saga without Arthur is like Hamlet without the prince, so I won't be writing it!
