Your Questions

Q

Hello Bernard ----

Linda and I were on the SAS trip to Waterloo a few years ago when dear Chris was with us and you guided the group.  We will be at Mont St Jean on June 18th mainly to see the renovation of Hougumont. Will you be there on the 18th? If so, will keep a look out for you and of course, the ghosts of Sharpey etal

George Knowles

A

At the moment I don’t know…but if I am I’ll look for you!

Q

Dear Mr Cornwell,

just finished your excellent book on Waterloo, very much enjoyed it. Noticed there appears to be two charismatic commanders of the 52nd referred to in the text and indexed at the back. A Sir John Colville and a Sir John Colborne. Are they the same person ?

Best Regards

Alan.

A

It is Colborne, not Colville - a mistake not caught in time!

Q

Dear Mr Cornwell,

I hope this finds you well Sir, as I'm a huge fan of your works, having read pretty much everything you have put to paper and I know that you are very busy with many projects but was wondering if the War of the Roses is on the table? I have read Conn Iggulden's current series which is great so far, but thought maybe yourself may venture into that time of history.

Many Thanks

Craig Barker, East Kilbride

A

I have no plans for the War of the Roses.

Q

I notice that the BBC series is advertised as comprising 8 x 1 hour episodes. Although it is entitled "The Last Kingdom" I wondered if you could tell me if the episodes just cover the first book or do they cover the Warrior Series as a whole?

Paul Stein

A

The first book!

Q

Hi Bernard

I have read all your Saxon Stories books plus the Grail Quest and The Arthur Books and I cannot wait for next book to come out ,I have read some other books on similar subjects but I do not get the same satisfaction as I do from yours , could you recommend another writer who can also mix fact and fiction on the same subjects ,for me to read until your next books come out , it may seem strange me making this request but I enjoy these eras and most other books are just factual accounts where as you give us a story also

Thank You

Dave Buck

Q

Good morning Bernard,

Just wanted to say I am a big fan of your Saxon series. I really liked what you did with "the empty throne" allowing Uhtred's son (Uhtred) a voice.

I was wanting to know if you still plan to continue on further with the Uhtred series? I have enjoyed immensely the series so far and of course I will be sad to see it end one day, but I realize you must have other interests as well.

Wishing you the best regards and health,

Mark Atkinson

I enjoy your books. I have been in the military for the last 11 years, and it's crazy how well you describe the feeling of battle. But, to get to my question. Is there another book on the way after The Empty Throne, with the rest of Uhtred's life and regaining Bebbanburg?

Justin Lloyd

I recently discovered your series The Saxon Tales and can't wait to read the  next book. I just finished The Empty Throne and look forward to the next, when do you think that might be?

Judy Byrum

A

I am writing the next book of the series now.  We hope to see it published in the UK in October and in the US next January.

Q

Hi Bernard,

I started to read again, the Warlord Chronicles, I'm just loving it, it feels like the first time I read it.

Can't stop imagining an adaptation into a mini series.

I read some news about a possible adaptation of the Last Kingdom, if this works, is possible in the future, to adapt the Warlord?

Just another Brazilian fan of yours, that just wants to say Thanks...

Alexandre

A

Anything is possible!  But there are no plans for it.

Q

Hello Bernard,

Thank you for replying to my last question. I actually have two more:

  1. Are you actually excited about The Last Kingdom being on TV? When I heard, I was as keen as mustard. You've seemed to maintain a casual demeanour about it.

  1. Having read Angus Donald's author notes at the back of his first book, he cites a lecture of yours and it gave him inspiration and more importantly a framework to write to. Does that make you feel proud?

Dan

A

Sure I’m excited, but I never forget that my job is to write books, not make TV programmes! I hope the series is brilliant, I hope I enjoy watching it, but however good it is I’ll still have to sit down and write another book!

It does!

Q

Hello Mr. Cornwell,

I have to say that I am becoming quite a fan of yours. I love to read historical fiction and I was turned onto the genre by George Macdonald Fraser’s Harry Flashman series. I’ve read the Otto Prohaska novels by John Biggins, the Jack Absolute novels by CC Humphreys, the Horatio Hornblower novels by Forester, the Archie Fox novels by Stewart Hennessey and the Fenwick Travers novels by Raymond Saunders. I am currently being blown away by the Richard Sharpe series and I look forward to tackling your Starbuck series as well. I was going to ask if you’ve been impressed by any of the newer historical fiction series that have come out over the last few years and I would also love to know if you recommended any in particular?

Keep up the great work, you’ve got an impressive library and I can’t wait to get into more of your work.

Thanks,

Andrew Post

A

I’d recommend the Matthew Shardlake books by C.J. Sansom, they’re brilliant!

Q

Hello,

Robert Ludlum, while he was alive was so protective of his Jason Bourne novels. Ludlum vetoed all efforts to film his novels except the Richard Chamberlain 1988 television movie and the 2001 film The Bourne Identity. Is this the same reason excepting Sharpe and The last Kingdom, none of your novels have been brought to televison and or film?

Regards,

Adrian.

A

No! I don’t care either way! I presume that books that have a lot of large battle scenes are prohibitively expensive to film, but other than that? I genuinely don’t care!
