Your Questions

Q

Hello: How tall was Wellington? I've seen numbers from 5'6" to 6'2". It seems like there should be a definitive answer based on eyewitness accounts and his existing uniforms, but no one seems to agree.

Betty Pannick

A

I’ve always understood that he was about 5’ 9”, but I can’t remember that source or even whether it’s correct!

Q

In the Saxon Tales, will Uhtred and Finan travel to Ireland to get revenge with those who put Finan in slavery?

Jim Brook

A

Hmmmmm. Maybe? Maybe in the book I’m writing now? Maybe!

Q

Dear Mr Cornwell,

Have just read your book Azincourt - amazing and a great read.  Will there be a follow up book involving Nicholas Hook as it seems a shame to finish where it did.  There  must be more mileage for him.

Thank you

Brian D Evans

A

I don't have plans for a follow-up right now.

Q

Will this book now end the series of Uhtred? Much as I love reading it and have the whole set including your other series. I'm a great fan. I  would like it to finish as I believe Uhtred can go no further, if at the end of the book  which I haven't got to yet, he reaches home.

Hi,

I have just read the last book in the series The Empty Throne.  I have been 'swallowing' the books up, the story theme is just great .......... how many more will there be in the set of Chronicles?

Angie Elfassi

Is the empty throne the last of the Saxon books? I've read them all in the last 4 months enjoyed them greatly. Hope it's not the last one.                              Yours truly   L. W.

A

I am writing the next book now, but still don't know who many there will be in this series!

Q

Hello Bernard

Are there anymore Starbucks novels in the pipeline?

I am a great fan of all your work but this series  is my favourite and listen to the audio CD's as my preferred method of "reading"

Keep the books coming and thank you for all the enjoyment you have provided over many years.

Ken Butters

Dear Bernard

I read and understood your reasons for delaying your next Starbucks book.  I thought The Fort was brilliant.  It was almost as though it was happening in front of you.  Keep writing and more Starbucks as soon as you can please!

Brian

A

I do hope to get back to Starbuck some day.

Q

Hello Bernard,

I recently finished the entire Sharpe series apart from a few short stories and your Making of England series plus many others. Now my question is have you ever thought about writing about the Battle of the Monongahela or the Braddock expedition during the 7 Years War/ French and Indian War?

This time period intrigues me because of the vast amount of verity of troop types, two weak British regular regiments and the colonial provincials being attacked by Native Americans and 30 or so French Colonial Provincials of far inferior numbers gaining such a crushing victory.

Theo Judd

A

I have considered the French and Indian War, but again, it's a matter of time!

Q

Dear Mr Cornwell

There doesn't seem to be many books about the English civil war, have you ever thought of writing a series?

Roy Goodall

A

I've considered it, have done some research, think about it, but lord knows where I'll find the time to do it.  So many other things I'd like to write first....

Q

Dear Bernard

I really believe I have read all of your books and so enoyed them all over the years as has my now 20 year old son. Just in the middle of Waterloo, a great read.

Couple of things:-

  1. I wonder if you knew that the Duke of Marborough is reouted to have ridden over the Waterloo battle area (which I visited sometime in the 70's) and is supposed to have said- 'If I every had to fight a battle defending Brussels, this is where I would choose to do it'. I had an amazing history teacher who never opened a text book and taught us by walking round the classrooom at great speed, making history live for us all - it came from him- True or not I don't know, but hey who wants to spoil a good story!

  1. I've really enjoyed your books where Bamborough is mentioned. My own family are Tates and Shafto's from that whole area, our history dates back to 1187, when we came from Normandy an were sent North to hold the Scots(or so my father and the family books say! One of my ancesters was put in charge of the Middle Marches by the kings of Scotland and England around 1490. He was maybe too efficient, was murdered- his four sons declared a vendetta, hunted the assssins down and killed them in Fife- their heads were put on spikes on the walls of Edinburgh Castle.

Having worked globally all my life I now live west of Aberdeen on the edge of the highlands and work from Shetland to Africa- as a company trunaround specialist and joke with the Scots - not to mess with me.

My grandfater was vicar of Beadnell and as a child many expeditions to Holy Island and Bamborough. My father and mother are buried in our ruined nunnery at Gyzance just by Alnwick.

All probably not at all interesting to you!! But please keep on writing- your books are all a great read and hugely enjoyed.

Kind regards andbebst thanks for all your work!

A

I haven’t heard that story and I hope it’s true!

Q

Hi, i have read all your books and am a big fan, i looked forward to reading the empty throne, what a huge disappointment, did you not have time to finish it or run out of ideas, maybe just too busy trying to make a tv show? I am happy to see it made into a show, just hope they do not try to Americanise it to much, they are amazing stories that could so easily lose the sense of freedom and honour that is so important in setting these stories apart from others, hopefully it will not be turned into a quest for a castle or something so simple, anyway, i just hope there will be another book in the series which will be more complete,

cheers,

Iain

p.s. i have always thought that your Stonehenge would make a really good epic movie, you must have thought about that, is it possible?

A

I guess anything is possible!  But there are no plans for a movie based on Stonehenge.

Q

Just finished  The Empty Throne and it's as brilliant as all the others, you are up there with Patrick O'Brian and C.S. Forrester.

I missed what happened to Steappa, sometimes I read too quickly and miss details on first reading. Is he dead? Will he be back?

One tiny complaint, could you write a bit quicker, I'm not getting any younger and I wouldn't like to miss the end!

Mike Davidson

A

He will be back!
