Your Questions

Q

Hi Bernard,

I am a humongous fan who has read all but three of your 50+ novels — they are also on the list —but that’s unimportant (everyone who writes you is a fan I’m sure).

My message/question is this: what became of Sharpe’s Spanish daughter Antonia born to Teresa? Did Sharpe ever travel back to Spain to find her?

Thank you for your time to answer.

Frank Fitzpatrick

Dear Mr Cornwell

Thank you for so many wonderful years reading wonderful books.

Apologies if this has already been asked and answered, but on the assumption she's unlikely to get a book of her very own - what lay in store for Antonia? Did she follow in her parents' footsteps or was Ramon able to set her on the path of a more peaceful life?

Thank you again.

Tom Watts

A

I confess I haven’t thought much about her subsequent life, though I’m sure Sharpe worried about her – so perhaps there’ll be news in a new book one day? I hope so.

Q

Hello again!

I've just finished Sharpe's Assassin, my goodness, I read those first few pages with a pint of Guinness in the pub, and was so shocked at how it was like meeting at old friend.

Sorry to ask this, but after a 14 year gap for Sharpe, will be ever see a return of my namesake Mr Nathaniel Starbuck?

I doubt you will remember this, but I met you in York in 2006, and you mercifully indulged my request to have my entire novel collection signed, which has followed me on my travels around Europe. My wife still can't believe you actually made the effort to sign them all.

Anyway, your fan, always

Nathaniel

A

It's not likely I will return to Starbuck.

Q

Dear Mr. Cornwell,

I'm currently reading "The Flame Bearer" (Saxon Stories, Book #10).

In the last couple of books in this series, as Uhtred ages, it occurred to me that he's like Odysseus - a great warrior, but as likely to outwit his adversaries as to outfight them,  always trying to get home (Bebbanburg), etc.

Did Odysseus cross your mind at all as you created Uhtred and plotted his journey through life?

Thank you for decades of wonderful books and countless hours of reading pleasure!

Sincerely,

Susan

A

I fear he didn’t – maybe he should have, but he really was no inspiration.

Q

Dear Mr. Cornwell,

Have you considered doing spin off novels for other characters within the world of Sharpe? For example, I would be very interested in a Sergeant Hakeswill origin story. How did he become so nasty?

Sincerely,

John Ridge

Loved Sharpe’s Assassin and  All your Sharpe books. Do you have any plans to write another Sharpe adventure?

Mike

A

I haven’t considered the spin-offs and probably won’t. But I am considering another Sharpe novel.

Q

You are my favorite author, and I have read all your books. I adore that you tackle the history and mythology of Britain and the manner in which you do so. I think that if ANYONE could tackle the legend of Robin Hood properly, it would be you. I am also confident you would be the perfect person to bring Boudicca to life. I am just curious if there is a chance we may see these stories at some point? Also, what is YOUR very favorite historical event/legend? Thank you for sharing your gift with the world!!

Kasey Buckles

A

My very favourite event? Probably Waterloo. Legend? The grail. Not very original, but you asked.

I have considered Robin Hood....not sure if it will happen....

Q

What is your opinion of the British colonists in the colonies who opposed Independence and migrated to the Canadian territory?

Jordan GollubW

A

I’m not sure I have an opinion!  To them it seemed the best solution and at least their descendants get better health insurance.

Q

Everyone always asks you if you plan on writing about X or following up with a new Y, which is very limiting. Instead, I want to ask you what are your writing plans for the 1,2 5, even 10 years?

P. S. - I would love a 1066 series with the audiobooks read by Jonathan Keeble

Ben Tideswell

A

None at all – just to write whatever I want! Truly. I’m thinking about another Sharpe novel, but after that? Really no idea. I just hope I have 10 years!

Q

I know I've asked this before but can you please write one last short story (a la skirmish and christmas); of Sharpe's adventures at Obidos or Rolica; the friction between Wellesley and Friere, Col. Lake's suicidal charge up the heights of Columbiera, Sharpe receiving Bunbury's vacant 1st Lieutenantncy...this was a pivotal engagement for both Sharpe and Wellesley. Thank you for all your books and consideration,

best wishes

Andrew Tyler

A

I’m not sure whether I’ll write any more Sharpe short stories, but I am contemplating taking him back into Spain for another novel.  So more is coming and Sharpe and Harper will march again.

Q

Hi Mr Cornwell,

I'm curious about your Canadian background and whether you've ever been tempted to incorporate Canadian history into any of your novels, regardless of the era. Undoubtedly, I don't need to tell you that the possibilities are endless, from the Expulsion of the Acadians to the French and Indian War to the 1917 Halifax Explosion.

All the best,

Alex.

A

I haven’t really considered it, though I am tempted by the War of 1812. Will it happen? I don’t know.

Q

I was on the Queen's yacht recently and saw some of your Sharpe series of books there. They were in the petty officers lounge so I don't know if the royal family read them, but maybe?

John W Pratt

A

I can’t imagine their Royal Highnesses slipping down to the Petty Officers’ lounge for a book, can you? Still it’s nice to know the books are there!
