Your Questions

Q

I am 70 years old and I read your first 4 books on the Chronicles and I would like to know when you will finish the Starbuck Chronicles? I have other books where the author has left  me up in the air in  the middle of a story and they have not once tried to finish the story and that has been 20 years ago. I am not interested in knights in shinning armor I am interested in true Civil War stories, and in Indian stories in the United States. I would like a response to this question.
Marlin Guffey

A

Well, there's a lot I'd like to do and Starbuck is on the list!

Q

Hi Mr Cornwell,
I am presently reading your book entitled Wildtrack & on page 69 you write the following " ne'er cast a clout till May be out' they say in England. No doubt you are aware how the Scots say it. "Dinna cast a cloot till May is oot."  This saying has been attributed to Robert "Rabbie" Burns the great Scottish poet. Is that correct?. I have read all your books & especially liked the Sharpe's series. Recommend them to anyone who is looking for a good read. Keep on writing.
Greetings from Canada & best regards,
Neil Dempsey.

A

Well, I Googled it!  And found this:  The earliest citation is this version of the rhyme from Dr. Thomas Fuller, Gnomologia, 1732, although it probably existed in word-of-mouth form well before that:

"Leave not off a Clout Till May be out.

Google will do for me!  Robbie Burns wasn’t born till 1759 (thankyou Google) so any attribution to him is probably wrong.

Q

Dear Mr. Cornwell,
I have very much enjoyed all your books about the medieval world. Any idea when you will have time to continue Uhtred's adventures? I am probably not one of your usual readers: I am a 71 years old retired librarian - your knowledge and use of history is impressive.
Thank you for reading my email.
Francine Yorde

Dear Mr Cornwelll
I would just like to say what a pleasure it has been reading your Saxon Stories about Uhtred. I have finished all the books in little over a week. They have got me gripped and hooked. Will you be telling any more tales about Uhtred??
Chris

please can you let me know when the next book will be published?  I have enjoyed the series and I have read the death of kings and I am eager to know when I will be able to read the next book
Joanna Miatt

A

The next Uhtred book, The Pagan Lord, is coming your way soon!  We hope to see it ready for publication in the UK in September.  Most likely next January for the US publication date.

Q

I have a couple of questions, so rather than submit multiple questions, I would like with your permission to do so at once

1) I Know you get asked this a lot but any plans for any further entries to the Sharpe series or perhaps a spin-off  involving a son of Sharpe lol?

2) Do you have any interest in Science Fiction, if so do you have a favourite author?

3) I noticed that you follow cricket does this include IPL, if so, did you hear about Gayle and his most recent innings?

4) Finally, are you planning to start a new series or will it be standalone books from now on?
Joshua Selig

A

I do plan to write more Sharpe books.

I really like Alastair Reynold’s books! Especially House of Suns, which is a marvel!

I really haven’t followed the IPL, but I’ll look for Gayle’s innings, and thank you!

No, my next project is (yet) another series which, I hope, will run in tandem with the Uhtred stories.

Q

Just reread Excalibur. Thank you for the ending. So fitting in relation to the Arthurian Legend. Left wondering. By the way, is Sansum based on Gildas?
Please also continue the Saxon Chronicles. Characters such as Uthred and Derfel show the humanistic side and high morals that enhance your works. Mahalo.
Richard

A

Sansum is entirely an invention, and truly wasn’t based on Gildas (about whom we know very little).

Q

I've read the entire Warlord series and I'm starting the Saxon now. That being said, if you could write about the heptarchy of England circa 620s to 630s it would fill in the two to some extent. The pagan Mercians, the Welsh still exerting influence, Wessex slowly expanding. Racial lines were evident but fading, as in the Saxons had kingdoms but some would still fly their banner under an Angle king. You're the only person who can illustrate this epic period of time in Britain's history!
Sharpe Williams

A

Maybe?  I don’t know.  I have thought of it, because it’s a wonderful period, but I get older and time ahead shrinks.

Q

Hello Bernard.
Just a quick question. Will "The Pagan Lord" be the final installment in the series?
Best wishes,
Paul.

A

Nope!

Q

I'm a big fan--started with Sharpe and have now gone through nearly everything else.Wondering when we will hear from Uhtred again?

Tim

Hello Mr. Cornwell.

Will there be a follow on Book to " Death of Kings"?
I have read all of your previous books which featured Lord Uhtred.
I know he getting on in years but I suspect many more adventures on his quest to reclaim his home.
Thank You:

George Hotchkiss

Mr. Cornwell
I've just finished the The Alfred series - BRILLIANT !!!
You can't leave me like this
What happens to Uhtred ? ( and Aethelflaed ) ?
Don't stop now !
Another book,  PLEASE !
Bense

A

You will have another Uhtred book soon!

Q

Hi Bernard,
I was wondering if you will be doing any book-signing/talks in the UK at any time soon? I am a great fan of your novels and I would love to get the chance to have some books signed and to hear you talk - you replied to my previous message about the length of time it took you to write The Winter King, which I found really interesting; thank you.
Kind Regards,
Cam

A

Hi Cam!  There's a good chance I'll be in the UK in September for the release of my next book The Pagan Lord.

Q

Dear Mr. Cornwell,
With shows such as Spartacus and Game of thrones coming out and gaining popularity, were you ever offered a show based on the saxon chronicles? If you were, would you say yes? I would very much LOVE to see a TV adaptation of it.
Jichael

Hi Bernard,
I was wondering if anyone has or is willing to make another television series like Sharpe on one of your other series like, 'The Warrior Chronicles/Saxon Stories or the Grail Quest'. There a wonderful amount of story telling in these stories that would make a good television series.
all the best
Barry

Hi. I am just finishing up book #6 in the Saxon Tales series. I want to say I am thoroughly enjoying it along with the rest of the series. It would seem to me that this 6 book series would make 6 great movies. I was wondering if you have ever been approached for this to happen or maybe something is in the works?
Thanks you,
Dave

A

There is nothing in the works as far as I know.  I would be happy to see it happen, but honestly, I don't spend much time thinking about it.
