Your Questions

Q

Just curious about something: I'm on  a Cornwall reading binge, and I've noticed that in most, if not all, you use "hoofs" and "hooves" interchangeably. Is there a reason for this? Is there a distinction between the two that I am not seeing?  (I also noticed "gray" and "grey" in the same paragraph in The Archer's Tale. ?? Same question. )  Thanks. Really enjoying your work.

Donna Gray

A

I suspect I prefer hooves, and can only think hoofs was a mistake.  And I use the British ‘grey’ which my American publisher turns into ‘gray’ and I can only think they missed a few in The Archer’s Tale (which in Britain was called Harlequin).

Q

Will you be doing another book in this series?  Billy Blythe & Belvedere Delaney are still walking around scot free!

Have finished this series and the Sharpe series and am about to start the Grail Quest. Thoroughly enjoying them all~~ Thank you!!

Susan Minniti

Hello

Have you any plans to continue the Starbuck Chronicles?

Regards

Colin Cross

Firstly, me and my dad are greatly looking forward to the release of Sharpes Assassin. My question is, do you plan to continue with the Starbucks series now that the Last Kingdom series has come to its conclusion or will there be a another book in the Sharpe series after Sharpes assasin is published?

Daniel Cole

A

I'm afraid Starbuck is still on extended leave!

Q

Hello Mr. Cornwell,

I participated in the Suffolk Library zoom event. It was a pleasure, thank you for sharing your time!

I've published a non-fiction book and am working on fiction now. I enjoy the writing and it is a joy to find out what happens in my own story. You mentioned how you don't know how Chapter 10 will end. That was encouraging to me. I have a general sense of where my fiction is going but am never quite sure if the story will end the way I think it will. I also found a great deal of enjoyment in discovering who my characters really are. Thank you for sharing and the encouragement it brings.

Two quick notes, first, the reason why you are one of my favorite authors is the unpredictability of your stories. I never am quite sure where your stories are going or how they are going to end. The stories beat my expectations every time.

Second, have you ever considered writing a children's book?

Thank you!

Jeff

A

Thank you!  No, I have no plans for a children's book.

Q

If you could take a moment and answer a question?  Is " 1356 " the end of Thomas Of Hookton's story?  I would be interested in knowing what happens to him and Genevieve.

Thank-you.

Al

A

I am not planning more for Thomas right now...but you never know.....

Q

Dear Mr. Cornwell,

I wanted to reach out and tell you how much I enjoy your stories! In fact, you are probably my favorite Author of all time.  Your imagery craft is astounding. We like a lot of the same things. (adventure, intrigue, history, fighting and women). Not necessarily in that order. From a small age I was always drawn to knights fighting glorious battels. Sometimes I wonder if I should have been born in 1400, sword in hand and wind on my face, or under a stifling helmet. This could be a secret but who is your favorite hero? There are so many to chose from. I am drawn to the time period of Uhtred but Sharpe is my favorite by a mile. I am a commercial real-estate broker in Richmond VA with 4 boys. Thanks again for all your work!

Isaac

A

I think it has to be the first Duke of Wellington!

Q

Hello again Mr Cornwell.

I seem to remember when attending one of your talks, either St Albans or Grenwich Armoury you mentioned you would one day disclose who Sharpe's father was. I wondered since you are writing a new Sharpe, is this something that we can look forward to?

Nigel James

PS have you been following the 6 Nations so far?

A

Oh, I thought we put that behind us a few years ago??  Sharpe’s father is a French smuggler.  We know his mother came from Dawes Heath in Essex which was a smuggler’s haunt and she must have fallen for a handsome, smooth-talking Frenchman and so gives birth to a Frenchman’s nightmare – Richard Sharpe.

In a rather desultory fashion, yes – though I was delighted by Maro Itoje’s late try!

Q

Dear Bernard

After seeing this clip on YouTube I wondered if you'd ever been tempted yourself on the Siege and Massacre of Fort William Henry. At the time apparently it was a huge event and propaganda for the rest of the war.

https://youtu.be/WeGdHTRz-bg

P.S Its huge but Fred Anderson Crucible of War is well worth a read on the French and Indian War as a whole

Geraint

A

No, and despite that clip (thank you!) I don’t think I’ll be tempted

Q

Hi Bernard,

I just finished Warlord. Great book, it was bittersweet knowing that was the last of the books in the Last kingdom series. My favorite of your books is the Arthur series. The last chapter brings tears to my eye's every time I read it. Any hope you will re-visit that time period with some new books?

Thanks,

Ryan Noble

A

I don't have plans to add to that series.

Q

When will the new Sharpe book will be available for purchase?

RAZVAN PRIBOI

Bernard,

Chronologically, where will Sharpe's Assassin fall?

I'm looking forward to it.

Thanks,

Matt Dorfman

A

With any luck it will be published in the UK on 30 September and 23 November in the US.  The book's title will be Sharpe's Assassin.  We hope to post the cover soon!

The book begins on June 19th, 1815, so just after Sharpe's Waterloo.

Q

It's taken a while but here it is the last the last Uthred was perfect  thank you. As for time scales check out Aubrey his last ten books were questionable to say the least and Flashman made it to Rourkes drift, (the word fiction is the clue).

I am starting Sharpe from the beginning again next  AWSOME.

Just to clarify Defel beats Sharpe (just ) then kicks seven shades out of Stabuck and is narrowly beaten by Uhtred who is then bested by Steappa.

I have just finished G M F WW II biography and wondered if you are as in awe as I am?

Mike Davidson

A

Totally in awe – and for anyone who hasn’t read George MacDonald Fraser’s second world war memoir – Quartered Safe Out Here – it’s a terrific read!!!
