Your Questions

Q

Bernard, I'm writing to ask if you can please resurrect Nate Starbuck. I've read (and re-read) the four chronicles you've published, and two years ago I toured some of the Civil War battlefields, which only whet my appetite for more. I was particularly impressed with the visitor centres and battlefield tours at Mannasas and Gettysburgh. I'd love to know if Nate makes it through, or if he doesn't, where (and how) he meets his end. I'm sure you've had many similar requests, and much as I enjoy all your other books, I'm really looking forward to finding out more about Starbuck. (As an aside, have you ever read any of George Shipway's historical novels? His "Imperial Governor" is one of my all-time favourites.)

Jim Davies

A

I'm a huge Shipway fan (especially Paladin and Wolf Time) - He's a marvellous novelist. I do hope to get back to Starbuck one day.

Q

Hello Mr Cornwell - let me begin by telling you how much I have enjoyed Richard Sharpe, firstly through the TV Series and now by reading the books. I'm unsure which should have been first, because of the differences in scripts, but they both have their merits and are both thoroughly enjoyable. I have now only the last four of your books to buy and read and will then have to wait with bated breath to see if any more are to follow. I took the plunge recently and bought "Redcoat" which I have just finished, and, to me, this is a book that cries out for a sequel!! What happened to Sam and Caroline? Did Sam join the Rebels and fight against his King? Did they achieve their dream and attain their stretch of paradise where they could farm and raise horses? Were there any problems with the Indians? Oh there is a wealth of fertile ground here to be explored and developed, in my humble opinion. What say you? Kind regards Ray van Rensburg PS Have just invested in "Rebel" and "Copperhead" - guess that must be close to identifying me as a fan? R

A

Perhaps some day there will be a sequel to Redcoat (no promises!). My next book, The Fort is also set during the time of the American Revolutionary War, but does not contain the same characters as Redcoat.

Q

Dear Mr Cornwell, Greetings, my name is Alex. I am a pupil at Monkton Senior School, where I believe, you yourself went! First off, I love your writing. Sharpe, Azincourt, Heretic, and the rest of the Grail Quest, all excellent books. But above all, I think the one I enjoy most is the Starbuck Chronicles! I am almost constantly listening to one of them, (don't worry, I read the books before I brought the audiobook), and I think they are such well written books, my favourite being Battle flag, followed by Copperhead. I am really interested in the Civil War, and have also read the books you recommend for Battle Flag, and Bloody Ground. The inevitable question however, is Are you writing another? There are some good battles after Antietam. Chancellorsville, and Fredericksburg, and they could make a great finale as with all your books. But there are so many loose ends in Bloody Ground though. Namely, will Starbuck get Billy Blythe? I would really like to finish Starbuck's Story. But: you are the writer, and I cannot force you to write it! But I would very much like some new reading for sometime soon. Yours Sincerely, Alex Manley Y9 MSS P.S. I Recommend Fredericksburg! Fredericksburg! by George C. Rable, for an excellent book on the Fredericksburg Campaign

A

Thanks for your message Alex! I do hope to finish Starbuck's story one of these days. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll be sure to read it!

Q

Mr. Cornwell I began reading your books less than two years ago and now have read several complete series. After hearing me go on and on about the books I have convinced several of my friends to read your books as well. We have two questions, one when will Uhtred return, and two when will Starbuck return? I understand you have recently gone in another direction with Agincourt, and Redcoat both of which I did enjoy; but I would like to continue with those two stories at your leisure. As a side note I have read some of the negative responses’ to the Arthur Books and find them completely wrong they were flawless. Thank you for your time Jonathan Cahall

Hi Bernard, I started reading your books as a result of enjoying the Sharpe TV series, I guess like so many others? Anyway, I have finished Sharpe, I totally loved the Arthur books, am enthralled in Uhtred and have just finished Starbuck and given that in the end the strong suggestion is that Nate will return, do you now have an idea when (if at all) this may be? Cheers, Ray

A

I believe the next book I write will be Uhtred. Starbuck? Can't say for sure when...

Q

Dear Bernard, There are prevision for the release of the "The Fort" in Brazil? Thanks and Congratulations for the amazing books!

Matheus Kuchenbecker

A

I don't think it's with the publisher in Brazil yet. If we hear anything, we'll let you know!

Q

Dear Mr. Cornwell, Greetings. I'm a huge fan of the Sharpe series and I was just curious if you had any plans to pen Sharpe's early adventures in Flanders. Thanks for your time. Will Jakeman

A

I have no plans for Flanders at the moment - having taken Sharpe backwards in time once I'm not inclined to do it again, but who knows? Maybe as a short story?

Q

Hi, did Sharpe's Tiger ever get filmed?
Darren Taylor

A

No, although 'Sharpe's Challenge' is loosely based on Sharpe's Tiger and Sharpe's Fortress.

Q

I read Sharpe's Gold in 1982, went back, caught up, and kept up ever since. I've read everything. I have two serious questions... [1] why have the Arthur books not been make into a mini series (best take on the Arthur legend ever written)? I have been waiting since 2002 for a sequel to Gallows Thief... one of you best characters and stories. When might we expect a sequel? Please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please... a million times PLEASE!
Michael Blake

A

I have considered a sequel to Gallows Thief....not sure if it will happen, but never say never! It would be nice to see the Arthur books made into films, but I suspect it may prove too expensive.

Q

Hello Mr. Cornwall, I am a really big fan of your books and wanted to know if there will be films about the saxon stories? regards, Oliver

A

No plans for it at the moment

Q

First of all thank you so much for writing the Sharpe books! Without them i doubt that my English skills would be as good as they are now. I'm a big fan of all of your books and can't wait for 'The Fort'. I'm wondering if you're planning on writing even more Sharpe books and that if you plan on bring Captain Chase back who was in Sharpe's Trafalgar as him and Sharpe seemed to get along well? Also I must praise you on Sharpe's Siege but I want to know why you chose to kill of Hogan when he was for me one of the best characters.
David Jones

A

It's possible we could see Capt. Chase again. I honestly do not remember why I killed Hogan off! It just seemed like a good idea at the time (though it probably wasn't).
