Your Questions

Q

Do you by chance know when Sharpe's Peril (the movie) is going to be released in the US. I am in the 2nd viewing of the series and Sharpe's Challenge. I absolutely love the movies...Daragh O'Malley bring such humor. It's the reason I watch the show. Thanks Kelly

A

Spring 2010 is all we know right now. We'll post the specific date once we hear it.

Q

Hello Sir. I'm reading the Arthur Books a second time now, I absolutely love them, My question is where did you get the inspiration for names such as Gorfyddyd.. Ceinwyn's father, or the monk in Dinnewrac, Maelgwyn, I can't be for sure, I think I once read or heard it's Welsh? Thanks for your time! look forward to reading the new Saxon story!

Jacob Pinkley

A

They're all Welsh names - taken from very old sources.

Q

Dear Mr Cornwell It's Danielle again, only this time I wanted to thank miss Elizabeth Miller for the information she gave and say I'll look it up again now I have this information updated. And thank you for your answer too, Mr Cornwell, you are truly dashing (but be aware of my tremendously good memory for promises). I've just finished reading Azincourt (and really really enjoyed it), and wanted to know if there is an specific origin for the name Ghillebert (le seigneur de Lanferelle), for my family name is Gilabert and I thought the similarity to be curious (also because I used to think it was a spanish name). Though my surname has probably nothing to do with the character's name, still, it made me curious about the veracity of the character, etc. Hope you and your family are having a very pleasant week!, Danielle.

A

I suspect Ghillebert is simply the French version of the Christian name Gilbert (or Wilbert) - and I had no specific reason for using it!

Q

Dear Mr.Cornwell, In addition to being a great fighter Sharpe has something of a reputation as a lady's man. He and Teresa had a daughter, he has a son, surely he has other children? Have you considered a book featuring these? Perhaps set around the time of the Crimean War or at Sharpe's death (of old age of course!!)

Derek Coleman

A

Not a book featuring Sharpe's children, although we may hear of them again in a Sharpe book (no promises!).

Q

Is it possible to give the Google Earth coordinates for where they stormed Gawilghur Fort? I can find the fort but cannot match the description or photos to the aerial image.

Harry Bonning

A

Try looking around 21.28 N 77.25 E - it's there! I don't have Google Earth or I'd try to be more helpful

Q

Hey Bernard! I just finished reading Sword Song and, like the rest of the Uhtred books, I loved it! However, there is something that kind of troubles me. I understand that Uhtred is a pagan and doesn't believe in God or Christian faith, and that you yourself were unfortunate enough to be raised by over zealous Christian parents, but not all of us are nut-bags like Asser or Erkenwald! Most of us are like Pyrlig (my favorite character by the way =D) or Willibald. I just hope that you don't hold any sort of resentment towards Christians. I didn't find anything in the FAQ about what your current religious standing may be, so for all I know, I'm wasting my time with this. Anyway, love the books, keep writing them, and I'll keep buying them!

Andrew K.

A

I give you good Christians and bad. There were some ghastly clerics, really horrible people! But I do try to be balanced, despite my distaste for all religions.

Q

Bernard I have just finished "The Burning Land" -- a very enjoyable continuation of a great series. Thank you. I was surprised, however, that the chart of "The Royal Family of Wessex" at the front of the UK edition shows King Athelstan as a descendant of Aethelflaed. I did enjoy your suggestion in your Historical Note that you have used your license as an author of fiction to denigrate Eathelred of Mercia despite the lack of supporting evidence. Making Athelstan the son of Aethelflaed (and presumably Uhtred) would, however, be much bigger stretch.

You're right - I haven't seen that genealogy table (the publishers generated it and I've only just received a copy) and I gave them the correct information, but it seems they've screwed up - sorry about that - I'll have them correct it

Q

Dear Mr. Cornwell In yours books you create a detailed atmosphere, it probably demands a lot of research. I would like to know where you do this research, do you research all by yourself or somebody helps you with that? I am not a native English speaker so forgive me for any grammatical mistakes

Lucas

A

I do my own research. I've been reading history since I was a child, and all that reading contributes to what I do. However - when thinking about a new book I'll spend some months reading in a very concentrated way, though how long and how much depends on the book. I'm now writing a book set in the American Revolution and, though I know the period well, I still needed six or seven months of reading.

Q

Greetings - Since I was a young boy (I'm now a 45 years old boy), I have been fascinated by the Arthur story. I made it a point to read every book on Arthur I could get my hands on. I am now on my third read through the Warlord series. Your books and Marion Zimmer Bradley's "The Mists or Avalon" are my favorites. I wonder: has anyone approached you about making movies or a series based on the three books? They really would make a (potentially) great series, as long as you keep it out of the hands of the folks who did the "Mists" mini-series - it was tripe. Really, the whole purpose of this note is to say thank you for some thoroughly enjoyable reads! Paul Johnston, Kent, WA USA

A

There's been some talk of it, but I suspect in the long run they would prove too expensive to make.

Q

Mr. Cornwell where can one purchase the latest SHARPE'S PERIL DVD in NTSC North American format? I can't seem to find one. I thoroughly enjoy all of you books and videos on the Sharpe series as well as the books on the Starbuck Chronicles, too bad you havent continued on with this particular character and series and too bad no video series on same. Thank you for you labours. Phil Riley

A

It is not available, yet. There are plans to show the latest two Sharpe films, 'Sharpe's Challenge' and 'Sharpe's Peril', on US television next spring (WGBH) and, I imagine, the DVD will be available some time after that.
