Your Questions

Q

The Warlord Chronicles are my favorite series of yours. There is quite a large gap between Derfel standing on the beach with Ceinwyn and his entry into Samsun's monastery. Any chance you will fill in the gaps with a new series? If not, "Sweet" William was exiled to the wilderness of Canada for the War of 1812. Being Canadian I would welcome (and more importantly buy) a series based here. Cheers Murray

A

I have no plans to add to the Warlord Chronicles. And no plans for a series on Sweet William in Canada, sorry!

Q

Hello Cornwell - just wanted to know if there is going to be any further stories regarding Uhtred after Sword Song? Really enjoyed this series - great reading. Regards J.

A

Yes, there will be more!

Q

Your books are fabulous! I'm a huge fan of yours. Did you ever want to write about Robin Hood? It seems to me that is a very famous character just like King Arthur. Very thanks to use your time to answer me. Sorry about English problems, I'm from Brazil! Bye! I hope you write about Robin Hood some day! Lucas Passos Barreto

A

It's not in my plans, though I admit I've thought about Robin Hood a few times . . . so the answer is I don't know, but I wouldn't bet on it, at least not in the immediate future.

Q

Hi Bernard, I do enjoy your books, I particularly enjoy The Grail Quest series. I was wondering if you had any plans to add to the Thomas of Hookton series? I do hope so. Yours hopefully, Paul.

A

No plans for Thomas at the moment...

Q

I have just discovered your Saxon stories and in The last kingdom you let Ragnar's eldest son describe the Irish natives as "skraellings" I have only read that word used for "red skins" the native North Americans. Where have you seen it used for the Irish natives? As a Norwegian I am interested in the Viking era and am looking forward to reading the whole trilogy as I enjoyed the Arthur trilogy!
Halstein Baltzersen

A

think I transferred it . . . seemed to fit, is all!

Q

I live in Japan, and just finished reading the Last Kingdom. It was an incredible experience. Out of sheer curiosity, are any of your ancestors related to any of the characters in the above book. When do you have time to write all these books? There are only 24 hours in a day. Thank you. David Trokeloshvili

In all the notes at the end of the Saxon stories, you say that you are descended from those who lived at Bamburgh Castle. Could you give more details?

And will the new Saxon (fifth) book be out soon? I have SO enjoyed all your books, but have not yet tried Sharpe or Starbuck. My favourite, by far, is Crowning Mercy. Barbara

Hi Bernard, Just wanted to ask when the next installment of The Saxon stories will be written/released? I am such a massive fan of those books and i can't wait to read the next one. Thanks for your time. Ben

Dear Bernard, Thank you so much for all the many months of pleasure I have had reading all your books. I first started reading them 20 years or so ago and relish picking up the next copy. I am delighted to say that my parents are now avid fans. It is on their behalf that I write to ask you this question. Do you have plans to write a 5th in the Saxon Chronicles series? If so, when might that be released? (They are very keen!) Many Thanks and look forward to one day meeting you at a book signing/conference etc, Matthew Jennings

Mr. Cornwell, will you be finishing the Saxon Stories? I have read most of your series, but really enjoy the Saxon stories. Thank you in advance, Justin Chrane

When will the next book of The Saxon Stories be released? Sean Hawkins

A

What I know was discovered by a member of my birth family (I only met them about five or six years ago). They were fortunate in being a prominent family . . . in Saxon times they were, first, kings of Bernicia (now lowland Scotland) then earls of Northumbria (thus the connection with Bebbanburg), and even after their fall (thanks to Cnut) they remained as county gentry in north Yorkshire . . . and the surname is distinctive enough to make them quite easy to trace through a tangle of records. I never checked the genealogy, but I have no reason to doubt it.

I haven't started the fifth book yet; but I suspect it will be my next book. If so, look for it to be published in the UK in October 2009 (and possibly in the US in January 2010).

Q

hi, I am a very big fan of the Uhtred tales and can't wait for the new book. I was just thinking how great it would be for a film or films to be made based on the books has there been any talk or interest about making a film based on Uhtred? many thanks, Pat Toft

A

No plans for it at the moment...

Q

I've just read the excerpt from your new book Azincourt and I was wondering, is Nicholas Hook meant to be a distant relative of Thomas of Hookton? Thanks for all the hours of enjoyment! Andy

A

He isn't. I took the name from the muster roll of the archers who really were at Agincourt and it just happened to be the name I liked best and, by coincidence, shared the Hook with Hookton

Q

I have just finished Sharpe's Trafalgar (for the second time)can you tell me what happened to Lady Grace and Sharps child. I have read all of the Sharp books over the years but can't recall reading any more about her. I really enjoy your books, long may they continue. Kind Regards Keith Mulley

A

You need to read Sharpe's Prey.

Q

Dear Bernard As we are all aware, Sean Bean brilliantly played Sharpe in the TV series but may I ask purely out of interest if you ever saw Paul McGann playing Sharpe before he broke his leg and do you ever wonder what his interpretation would have been like and how it would have differed from Sean Bean's? PS Any thoughts yet on the next one? Rob Comber

A

I never saw any of that footage, but I'm sure he made a terrific portrayal! I have no idea how his interpretation would have differed. Maybe he would have been more introspective? Really don't know. The next Sharpe book is a few years away so no thoughts to share at the moment.
