Your Questions

Q

I stumbled into the Saxon tales luckily by accident.I bought the third book without realizing that this was a series. Is there a 5th coming next year? I can only hope.By the way, there is a book called Bloodfeud by a Richard Fletcher. It also has a character named Uhtred .Any connection? C Jacobsen

A

Very much so - - he's a direct descendant of the Uhtred in my novels . . . and thus one of my ancestors. He's also the family member who lost Bebbanburg, mainly because he fell out with King Cnut who arranged to have him assassinated. It's a very good book - sadly Richard Fletcher dies shortly after finishing it. Yes! There will be a fifth book, probably in 2009.

Q

Dear Bernard In regards to the next Sharpe book if you do get him to Albuera (I think there were 6 real life riflemen from the 60th who managed to fight at both Fuentes and Albuera so its not impossible) I wondered if he might encounter a certain Colonel Dulong again (who I was amazed to find out was at the battle in Werle's Brigade) and who led Soult's rearguard afterwards as well. yours sincerely Geraint

Mr. Cornwell- Long time reader/fan of your work especially the Sharpe series and I especially enjoyed "The Gallows Thief", a very nice one off. Waiting eagerly for the next Sharpe book, trying to guess where and how you might put him into the few periods of time available to him. Any chance he'll be showing up during ALbuera soon? He's the only man that could be responsible for the Buffs saving some of their colors. What ever you throw my way will be eagerly devoured. Thanks -RIC-

A

It's possible - anything is possible - but I still don't know what the next Sharpe book will be.

Q

Sir, As a military historian, collector of weaponry and militaria, builder of models and figures reflecting these interests,I thank you sincerely for your many masterpieces. Your writings have greatly added to my literary pleasure and have provided inspiration for my avocational pursuits. I look forward to future tales of Sharpe, Starbuck, and Uhtred,as well as Azincourt ! I have a question based on your bio notes within your website. Please understand that I am not suggesting or offering an idea; have you ever considered a tale of aerial warfare? Thanks again for your magnificent works. Yours very truly, Edward Tharp

A

No . . . . . and I don't think I will! Not my area at all!

Q

Sir. Thank you for your reply to my earlier question. As I buy and sell English medals for a living (40 years this year), could you please tell me what medals Richard Sharpe would have been awarded I would think they would be Army of India medal, Military General Service Medal 1793-1814 and the Waterloo Medal, can you help. I forgot he killed Tippo Sultan therefore he would have been awarded the Seringapatam medal which was awarded to British and Native troops.

D.D.Ingle.

A

Sharpe wouldn't have received any medals during the wars, because none were awarded until after . . . and as I haven't written that part of his life I fear I haven't researched it at all. Not sure Sharpe would be very much bothered about it . . . but I guess he'd receive the three you mention . . . if they could ever find his address.

Q

Hi Bernard, hope you are well. I'm just writing to ask how do you stop yourself from ending a story too soon? When I'm writing I find that I rush toward the ending. Are there any tips you can give to stop this? Did you have this problem yourself after writing short stories? Thanks for your books, they are brilliant. Ben

A

Rush towards the ending, get there, then rewrite. Then rewrite again. Once you've done that, rewrite it. Then rewrite it. It will stretch.

Q

I was reading the book Fallen Angels and I was wondering if you could tell me the meaning of Ja develesa shukar, it has bugged me since the first time I read the book and stayed up till six to finish it if you could tell me I would be thankful. Kirsten

A

I have no idea - it was written so long ago. I'll attempt to find out for you!

Q

Dear Mr. Cornwell I'm not sure if you are aware this yet but there is a fantastic group dedicated to Sharpe on facebook.com entitled Sharpe's Rifles with some absolutely fantastic discussions and with some very dedicated people. If you have some time ( of which I'm sure all your spare time is precious) please check it out and witness the excitement, dedication and passion you have inspired and perhaps leave a comment as I'm sure everyone would be thrilled to have Sharpe's creator drop in! Yours Sincerely, Michael from Sharpe's Rifles

Hello Mr. Cornwell, I started a facebook group called Sharpe's Rifles, and today they are in a flurry, because apparently you had joined our humble group. Is this true or is there a person with an elaborate fake profile? Thanks.
Joel Castro

A

It's me, really. I saw your posting that you'd consult the official website, and you have, and the answer is yes! A friend nagged me into joining Facebook, but I'm really not sure how it works and I'm fairly certain I'm not using it properly, so lord only knows how long I'll stay . . but for the moment I stumble along.

Q

Dear Mr Cornwell, I have looked through the question pages and asked a few friends who are fans of the Sharpe series and still I'm unsure of something in regard to the Sharpe books. My reading of the series has never been anywhere approaching chronological so perhaps that has something to do with it and I've missed the answer. Perhaps you are unfinished with the character? My question is what becomes of the lawyer, philosopher and warrior extraordinaire Lieutenant Vicente? Thanks! Rhys Adamec

A

I haven't finished with him . . . . he's part of the second series that I'm still writing - all the problem of me stupidly having written the books out of chronological order, but Vicente's fate has yet to be decided!

Q

Dear Bernard In regards to future books or works I was wondering if you had ever considered Monmouths rebellion or the Jacobite wars at all???

You mention your next work will be a Uhtred novel, any chance of him involved in the actions around Chester and the Northwest with the Vikings???

And might I ask are there any good books you would recommend on Banastre Tarleton and Francis Marion at all??? Yours sincerely Tony

P.S If you have not read them both Richard Holmes new book on Marlborough and Joseph Whitehorn's book The battle for Baltimore are excellent reads.

A

I've considered both, plus about fifty other ideas, so will it happen? Honestly I don't know!

Probably not in the next book - I'll know more when I start to write it.

I don't know of any . . . . sorry . . . . I'd suggest putting both into Amazon's search engine and follow their leads!

I just started the Richard Holmes, and I have the other in the 'one day I'll read that' pile. Thank you!

Q

I wonder if you are a cat lover? It seems to me in the Sharpe books that there is always a cat, often with a litter of kittens, and Sharpe is often picking up cats, putting them on his lap, or giving them a stroke. I am glad that the cats seem to go unscathed in Sharpe books - as an avid cat lover myself, Sharpe becomes an even nicer character because of his gentleness with cats.
Barbara Francis

A

I adore cats. Dogs are just too dependant, cats look after themselves. Stalin once condemned a colleague to the firing squad and the man, who had helped Stalin's rise to power, said 'have you never heard of gratitude?' 'Gratitude?" Stalin answered, "isn't that a disease of dogs?'
