Your Questions

Q

Mr. Cornwell, Just finished Stonehenge and am once again amazed at your ability to portray Ancient Britain so vividly. Do you have any other plans for novels on Pre-Roman Britain? Come to think of it, have you ever thought about writing about Scotland? David McColl

A

I don't have any such plans . . . and I really think that writing about Scotland is best left to the Scots! So I hate to sound so negative, but it's a no-no situation.

Q

Just a quick word to say how much I enjoyed the Grail Quest series. My dad put me on to Sir Nigel and The White Company by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and as your works are based on the same period and events, I was attracted to them. Has there been any interest in filming this series?

Also, why did you choose the modern French spelling of Azincourt, rather than the traditional spelling of Agincourt for your up-coming title? Regards Gary.

A

No film plans for the Grail Quest series at the moment.

Mainly because there are so many books already published called Agincourt and I thought that using the French spelling would help people when it came to ordering the book ('no, no, the one spelt with the Z'). And, I confess, I quite like the look of the French spelling! And it is their village, so maybe we should grudgingly allow that they know how to spell it.

Q

Hi Bernard, I love your books, especially the Starbuck chronicles, at the end of The Bloody Ground it says 'Starbuck will mach again.' Does this mean you are writing another Starbuck book ? Alex Guermech

Hi, I am 19 and I am cannot take it any longer. Are you ever going to write any more to the Starbuck series???? "Starbuck will march again"???? Does this ring a bell?? You're killing me over here. I have read each book at least ten times so now I know them all by heart!! I need more Starbuck. Is there a chance of you writing any more??? Ben Rowe

A

There is a chance Ben, but I sorry I don't know exactly when that will be.

Q

Hello, I find your character Uhtred fascinating! Will you continue his story until Bebbanburg (sorry for the mispelling) is again his? Also has there ever been talk of making Uhtred's story into a movie? Matt

A

No movie plans, but Uhtred's story will continue!

Q

Bernard Just a short note to encourage a "traditional movie" version of Sharpe series, like "Master and Commander," starring Russell Crowe. I have seen the BBC series. Sean Bean is terrific. But the BBC produced series and event staging don't do your books justice. I hope you have good news to share? Best DW

A

The lastest Sharpe film news is 'Sharpe's Peril' - currently in production. For more information about the Sharpe films, click on this link: http://www.sharpefilm.com/.

Q

Hi Bernard I have been flicking through the cast list for the new Sharpe TV film (Sharpe's Peril) on the old Internet and I noticed a very interesting name. CORP. BARABBAS HAKESWILL Going by the name of this character I have to presume that the writers of the TV series plan to introduce Hakeswell son into the TV series. As such I'm just wondering if you had any input into this new development? Many thanks for all your great books. Phil

A

Until I read your question I had no idea that there was a Barabbas Hakeswill in the new programme! Well well!

Q

Just curious if you were planning on continuing the Saxon Stories and when the next one might be coming out (yes, I know Sword Song just came out here in America, but I really do love the series). Thanks!
Rick Savors

Hello Bernard, I have been wondering if you intend to write any more books for The Saxon Stories, If so when can we expect them to be published? Kind Regards Paul

Dear Mr. Cornwell, I would just like to say that I began reading your Saxon Stories about two weeks ago and i was very pleased with those books. They were the first books of yours that i have read and i was very impressed and will begin reading your Arthur books soon.I was wondering if there was going to be another book in the Saxon stories? If so i look forward to reading it.I wish you luck with your writing and hope that you will always find joy in what you do, because your writing brings joy to so many peoples lives and it is only fair that you have joy in return! Carolyn J Frazier

Good day, Just wanted to say that I am a great fan, I travel a lot by car and have started collecting audio books so Sharpe and Uhtred can accompany me. When's the next Saxon novel coming out? I look forward to it! Thank you for making the road more enjoyable (and shorter) for me. Kind Regards, DJ Viergever Pretoria South Africa

Will there be a sequel to Sword Song & if so when? Regards, Gordon Atkinson

Hi, just wondering when the next instalment of the Saxon stories will arrive. Thanks, LEE.

Is there a 5th book in the Saxon chronicles? If so, when will it be released? L. Jones

Hello Mr. Cornwell, I have to say that you are one of my favourite authors and me and my father enjoy reading your books immensely. I have especially enjoyed reading your Uhtred series, which is why today I looked at your site to see if there is another book coming in the series. Under the "coming soon" section it said that the next book was called Agincourt, so I was just wondering when you will be writing the next book in the Uhtred series? By the way, you are very dedicated to your fans for answering all these questions. Keep writing. -Devin

A

The next book I write will most likely be the next book of the Saxon stories. Look for it to be published in the UK in October 2009.

Q

Dear Bernard A very quick question, but do the Chesire archers feature in your new novel "Azincourt"? Cheers Phil

A

Not as such . . . I really don't say where any of the archers come from.

Q

Hello Mr Cornwell, may your writing never stop. I am enjoying Sword Song so much I read it really slowly. On page 264 you write about a scot ale. I have never heard of this and being of English origin should I? Where does the term come from? Also is Osferth from history or your rich mind? I do look forward to Agincourt. P.S. Still cannot get Sword song in hard back in Toronto. Regards and keep the wind at your back. Nicholas

A

Scot in scot-ale has nothing to do with the Scots, but is a now defunct English word meaning 'payment', so a Scot Ale could be drunk as sealing a payment, and, for once, I didn't make it up! Nor did I make up Osferth! There is some evidence (not conclusive) in the various records that Alfred might have sired a bastard before his conversion to extreme piety. It isn't certain, but I liked the idea.

A hardback copy of Sword Song can be found on Amazon.ca (ISBN is 978-0060888640)

Q

Dear Mr. Cornwell I have a question that I hope you can answer. I recently read that Napoleon had Polish Winged Hussars in his army. They fought for him because he promised them independence. I was wondering if Sharpe could have encountered any of them? I have read that they were a force to be reckoned with and that they fought for the French in Russia but that's about all I know. I don't know if Sharpe would have liked them because they were on the French side but I'm sure he would have some respect for them on the field.. your fan Pat. I got a B+ on my report on you!

A

He certainly had Polish cavalry and the lancers were much feared . . . and if Sharpe meets them I assure you he will have great respect for them! (Congratulations on your good grade!)
