Your Questions

Q

I am a German Navy who had his heart opened to the Army side of life by your books. I have read 3 so far, uncoordinated. I was wondering whether there would be a chronological list for me, by which I could buy and read the books, either read myself through Sharpe´s Life or through the Napoleonic Wars.

Would you know of any German or other Author who might write a about a character similar to Richard Sharpe, but "fighting" himself through the German, Russian and more northern European Napoleonic Times, which you could recommend to my reading ? Dirk "Leo" Solterbeck

A

You will find a chronological listing of all the Sharpe books on the Sharpe books page of this website.

I'm sorry, I don't! Does anyone out there?

Q

Dear Bernard We know that Uhtred lives to his 80's, as such I feel compelled to ask whether we will hear about any of Uhtred's son's/daughters or grandson's/granddaughers. After doing a bit of research myself I have discovered that a number of characters could be related to Uhtred, namely Osulf - Earl of all Northumbria in 954, with death of Eric Bloodaxe. and his son Waltheof I was the earl of Northumbria (963-995), the son and successor of Osulf I (Waltheof is a Danish name which is curious).Waltheof was succeeded by Uchtred (or Uhtred), called the Bold, who was the earl of Northumbria from 1006 to 1016, when he was assassinated. He was the son of Waltheof I, earl of Bernicia, whose ancient family had ruled from Bamburgh north of the Tees since the late ninth century. In 1006, while his father was alive but too aged to fight, Uhtred defeated Malcolm II of Scotland at the siege of Durham, and he was rewarded by King Ethelred II with the earldom of all Northumbria. Just wondering if somehow this all fits together with your masterplan for Uhtred? Kind Rgds Phil

A

Well my story will end long before 954! But yes, my Uhtred is related - as am I - I'm a direct descendant of the Uhtreds who held Bebbanburg. So we'll only see Uhtred's descendants up to his death . . . . .

Q

Hi Bernard whats the story? I'm from England Somerset but used to live in Dublin 'the city that defied an empire' as i was kept on being told :) lived there for over 3 years moved back home last year to my parents got a little tired of the anti-english comments and the like, but just wondered if you lived in the north or in the south as some of the people in your books are Irish and what were your experiences like maybe they were different to mine, ok kind regards. Ross T

A

I lived in the north, but spent a lot of time in the south, and have to say I came across remarkably little anti-English sentiment. That it existed, I have no doubt, and much of it doubtless well-earned, but the Irish, to me, were always remarkably generous. I loved the place!

Q

I am a recent convert to your books and have read most of them. I especially like the early sailing books as I am a displaced Englishman, like yourself, living in the USA, Florida. Are you going to write more tales of sailing?

It seems to me that with your background, a novel covering the Blitz of London would make that event part of the history books and prevent it from being forgotten. It does not deserve to be! Please do not look on this as a book suggestion, just as a plea for my English background to be immortalized.

Incidentally, do you now spell in English or American? David P. McQuire

A

Thanks! No more sailing books in my plans at the moment (maybe when I retire?).

Sorry . . . I really doubt I'll ever cover either of the Wold Wars. There are plenty of authors who do write about that period, but I fear I won't be joining them!

I spell in English but the American publisher does 'Americanise' the spelling for the US publications.

Q

Dear Mr. Cornwell I started reading the Eagle series written by Simon Scarrow and enjoy the books. But the story is written mostly from the roman point of view. I would like to read about this period of time from the British point of view. Are you planning the write about this time period yourself or do you have any reading suggestions?

Also I noticed that though called the Arthur books. The books feature Derfel Cardan more prominent than Arthur. Which is good in my opinion for he (Derfel) is my all time favourite character. Why and how did you come to the decision to tell the story through Derfel and not through Arthur? My last question is what is your opinion on religion? Is the role the Church plays in your books all based on history or which I highly suspect (and hope) also partly your own opinion? Frank Kramer

A

I'm going to leave the Romans and their foes to other writers . . . not a period that fascinates me, although I particularly loved Robert Harris's Imperium recently. For other recommendations, be sure to take a look at the Reading Club page of this website.

I have no idea! These decisions are more intuitive than considered. I really do wish I could tell you the answer, but it's not something I gave any thought to - it just seemed better to see Arthur through another person's eyes rather than through my own. The same with Alfred and Uhtred!

Religion was more prominent in the past than it is today so religion has to play a fairly large role in any historical novel.

Q

Hello Mr Cornwell I was just wondering if the french-speaking,war-observer in the Rebel and Copperhead books was Sharpe's son or grandson who took his mothers name of Lassan? Many thanks for all the good books.Tom

A

Sharpe's son.

Q

As a long time Sharpe fan, I have often wondered why, in view of the fact that he was raised in an orphanage in a London slum, he speaks with a broad Yorkshire accent? (In the movie versions at least) Not that I am complaining mind; being an expatriate Yorkie myself. Looking forward to reading Sword Song. Gary Worton

A

Sean speaks in good Yorkshire - a far cry from a London accent, but it never worries me - in the books I say that Sharpe spent the latter part of his childhood in Yorkshire, and children have an extraordinary facility for picking up accents, so it fits.

Q

Dear Mr.Cornwell I've been reading your books for years now and it just occurred to me are you ever going to have the Sharpe books released as a box set? The reason I ask this is because I own most of them and have read even more but it annoys me that I have so many different covers. thank you, Josh

A

It is up to the publishers, but I don't think they'll consider it until the series is complete.

Q

Hello Bernard I'm just about finished with the Sharpe series as I'm a big military history enthusiast, and I must say I've enjoyed every one immensely my favorite being escape. I have a few questions for you. Will we see Sharpe's daughter with Lady Grace and I seem to recall that Sharpe get rich at the end of Devil is that true or jut wishfull thinking in my imagination? And after Sharpe what book or series of yours do you recommend next. Thank you for hours of enjoying your adventure filled literature.
Cameron Stewart

A

Sharpe's daughter (with Teresa, not with Lady Grace) is Antonia, and perhaps we'll see her again...I think I left him comfortable - a reward for all the hardships I've put him through. Perhaps you'd like to give the Saxon stories a try?

Q

I have read and watched all the Sharpe series as well as The Grail Quest series and have started on the Saxon Stories. I eagerly await Sword Song. I have thoroughly enjoyed all your books and you are among my favourite authors. I live in Peterborough, Ontario and my ancestors originated in Gloucestershire. This may be why I find your books so fascinating and entertaining. Will you ever be coming to Canada for a book signing?

I also would like to know which of your series and which of your books is your personal favourite. Once again, thank you for your talented writing and the hours of enjoyment I have received in reading them. Stephen Beach

A

No plans for Canada at the moment, but I may be back there some day.

My favourite? Hard to say...I've always reckoned the Arthur trilogy are my favourite books - maybe because they were such a pleasure to write. But I find Uhtred is almost as much fun and I take huge pleasure from Sharpe...
