This is a truly outstanding book. The meticulous level of detail never gets in the way of the narrative. The unimaginable suffering endured by Napoleon's ill-fated Grande Armee is recreated with unflinching accuracy. Immediately after finishing this book I emailed Bernard Cornwell and begged him to write a novel about Napoleons war in Russia - he replied that he would 'think on it'. That was a few years ago now. In the meantime, I cannot recommend this magnificent book highly enough.
