Another instalment in the successful Sword of Empire series. This story follows on some years after the events of Praetorian, and offers the usual combination of great dialogue, engaging characters and a well-executed battle-scene. The historical setting is excellently maintained and provides the perfect backdrop not only for the battles and strategy, but for the personal interactions of the praetorians, too. I especially liked the realistic dilemma Rufus and Maximus face in negotiating between their duty as praetorians and their loved ones, all the while trying to survive the intrigues that are part-and-parcel of life in Ancient Rome.
