This is the first in a series of books, set in the Napoleonic campaigns. Rather like the Sharpe books they centre on one main character, namely Alain Lausard, an aristocrat forced to live as a peasant to escape the terror, conscripted from prison to serve in Napoleon's army as a Dragoon. This book centres on the recruitment and training of Lausard and his comrades, and their first battles in Italy facing the Austrians. I have now read the first three in the series and have enjoyed them very much. However they don't seem to have quite the same depth and feeling that is in the Sharpe books.
