Although I'm not usually a fan of modern-day/political/espionage/war thrillers, I stumbled across this title when it was published in the early 90's. Set at the turn of the millennium, it poses an intriguing premise: The former Soviet Union has split into a dozen republics, while the Balkans - embroiled in a savage genocidal war - arrests the UN's full attention. France and Germany have taken advantage of such chaos, combining forces to form Confed - with ambitions of dominating the European continent. Fearing such a powerful hegemony, three small nations defy this threat to their freedom...eventually, both Great Britain and the United States are drawn into a desperate, bitter conflict which threatens to set Northern Europe aflame once again...
Larry Bond takes us across a Europe beset with racial hatreds and conspiracy, heart-pounding jet-fighter battles, the deafening roar of tank columns, and fierce hand-to-hand combat, all decisive in a nightmarish war guaranteed to get the adrenalin pumping.
However, now that we're beyond the millennium (which proved relatively peaceful than depicted in the novel), this would now be seen more as alternate history than a near futuristic thriller.
