It is 1537 and King Henry VIII has dissolved the Catholic Church. Thomas Cromwell, Henry's vicar general, has sent one of his commissioners to the Scarnsea monastery to oversee its destruction but is murdered. Cromwell sends Matthew Shardlake to investigate. What he discovers is treason, sexual misconduct, and embezzelment. This is a excellent historical mystery and is followed by 'Dark Fire,' 'Sovereign,' and soon to be published 'Revelation.'
