"Faded Coat of Blue" is the first book of Parry's Abel Jones series--a set of 5 (so far) mystery novels set during the American Civil War. Parry is a highly gifted writer with the ability to bring the past to life with stunning imagery. His characters are well-rounded and enchanting. While the stories are all set against the backdrop of the Civil War--with side trips into Jones' past in India (shades of Kipling)--the stories are more about the time than about the war itself. Each book of the first five is unique in subject, setting, and tone, though all are captivating.
