This is the best book I ever read. It centers around a battle in 480 b.c. when the Persian Empire invaded Greece. King Leonidas of Sparta leads a small force of allied Greeks against Persian at a narrow pass. The story is told by one of the "grunts" in Sparta's army. The battle scenes are smash mouth, gritty, and in your face. The story is great, the reader is really drawn into the character's struggle. Pressfield writes historical fiction as well as Cornwell. His other book are Tides of War, Last of the Amazons, and Virtues of War. They are all great.
