This is an exellent alternative historical fiction trilogy. It begins with the confrontation at Gettysburg that becomes something totally different from the actual events. It's not the plots of these books that are the most satisfying, however, it is the way the authors have turned iconic figures like Lee, Grant, and Lincoln into real people. They also introduce mostly unheard of historical figures who played significant roles.
The story goes from Lincoln handling his cabinet to Lee and Grant planning their next moves wondering what the other is up to.
The battle scenes are described in ways that had this guy feeling like he was in the thick of it. Those scenes rank right up there with Bernard Cornwell, and that's saying something!
