I didn't realize it at the time, but this was self-published. This was the author's first book and he did a great job. The setting was well researched and the story arc flowed very well!
This book has certain similarities with The Warlord Chronicles. I received those books from my boyfriend a while ago and thoroughly enjoyed them. This book must have popped up in my email based on me enjoying similar titles set around the fifth century. There are kidnappings, religious conflicts, and Romans trying to make a living now that Rome ditched them to fight people closer to Italy.
I saw on the author's twitter he was a huge Bernard Cornwell fan and figured this would be a cool little thing for him to see if its ever featured in your reading club. He seemed nice when I briefly spoke to him, so I figured why not.
