Instruments of Darkness

First story of, until now, a series of 4 featuring the Harriet Westerman, strongwilled and intelligent, and Gabriela Crowther, a reclusive pathologist, solving a murder mystery. It's mid 18th century, rural England, all very proper and neat. There are lots of good things to say about this book, and the other 3 for that matter, but what makes it really stand out for me is the Westerman/Crowther combination. One is intuitive, extrovert, impulsive, the other the opposite: logical, methodological and not very interested in living people at all. Seeing their, very respectable, relationship develop is just as fascinating as the mystery itself. A great read.
