A great book to read to start you off on an epic twenty book series. Captain Jack Aubery and his Surgeon and secret spy Stephen Maturin are fine characters and develop a good relationship on board the ship The Sophie. The writing captures the life led by the Men of the Royal Navy at that period of time. O'Brian is one of the best at sea-faring novels. A must for fans of the Sharpe books.
