MOTHERLESS BROOKLYN

This is crime fiction, not historical fiction. Well worth the read. Lethem more often writes fantasy/sci-fi titles so this was a departure for him. The main character, Lionel Esrog, is a haphazard "detective"(among many other things) who happens to suffer from Tourette's. His mentor and father figure was murdered and Esrog is determined to find out who did the killing and why. While the Tourette's angle would seem to make the dialogue difficult to follow or the story hard to stick to, it achieves the complete opposite. Well-written and hard-driving, I couldn't put the book down.
