Dubbed by both Robert Lee and Sherman the most extraordinary man of the War, while also the most feared and hated by the North. This is an excellent biography of a Slave Trader and failed Businessman who became arguably the most brilliant soldier of that war. Though the massacre at Fort Pillow has never really been explained and will always be a black mark against him.
To post War where he would form the evil Ku Klux Klan and would lead the violent and brutal dirty war that would get the South back a lot of what it lost during the war (Which included men like Wade Hampton and John Gordon of Northern Virginia fame).
To a man who then converted to Christianity (Before then he thought it just a woman's religion), his disbandment of the KKK and becoming, incredibly, a racial moderate. This is an excellent biography of a man who was the Jekyll and Hyde of the Civil War. Worth a read.
