This is the first in a series of four of the biggest books I have ever seen, but do not be daunted by this, as you will soon be wishing the books to never end.
The story itself is set about 20 years into the future with the only major change from today's technology being an advancement in online gaming and the internet. People can now virtually live alternative VR lives plugged into a machine, however all over the world children plugged into the net keep going into comas, seemingly for no reason. South African I.T lecturer Rene becomes concerned about this when her brother Stephen is one of the children effected, but instead of pursuing the problem medically Rene takes the search online... Eventually leading to a multi million-dollar project, Otherland.
The richness of the narrative and storytelling is fantastic; and the formula of Otherland allows Williams to visit many different genres in the one novel, as the online worlds depend entirely on the imagination of their creator. Well worth a read, even if the whole series will take out a few months of your life!
