I have just finished this fantastic book today and am already 100 pages into Bernards' latest offering The Pale Horseman, which I am delighted to say is up to his his usual impeccable standards.
Pride of Carthage tells the story of Hannibal Barca, famously known for taking his army, complete with elephants, over the alps and almost defeating a fledgling Rome before she became the ancient world's biggest superpower.
The story is set during the Second Punic War and is told mainly from the viewpoint of the Carthaginians. As with the best historical fiction the characters are vividly brought to life and I found myself really rooting for Hannibal and hoping that he would defeat Rome ( though I obviously knew this would not turn out to be the case). The narrative kept me up way too late on several nights and served to further fuel my hunger for further reading on Rome and the period in general. I am also a massive fan of Conn Igguldenn's Emperor series and Simon Scarrow's books as well as the Rome Total War game and I am prepared to say that this book easily lived up to the very high standards set by these authors. If you are also interested in this period of history then you will love this book.
