To me The Killer Angels was THE best civil war novel ever so I am a huge fan of books that are written from the viewpoint of the men and officers who actually fought the fight. This one features a rare look at The young Napoleon George B McClellan, D.H. Hill (a underestimated C.S.A. General Ambrose "Little" Powell Hill, Jesse Reno, Fitz John Porter, Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson, "Fighting Joe Hooker, and of course Lee and Longstreet. The action follows the cast from South Mountain to Harpers Ferry to the banks of the Antietam creek near Sharpsburg where the bloodiest single day battle in American history is waged and the best chance to end the war by the Union is blown by the timidity of McClellan. If you read Cornwell's The Bloody Ground and are interested in more about the Battle of Antietam Creek while we wait for the next Starbuck Chronicle this is a splendid book written by a former Marine.
