Purnell’s Concise Encyclopedia of History

My sister bought this huge book around my fifth birthday - and it's more ideal for younger readers to get into history. Even if the reading level was a little high for my age at the time, nevertheless I was fascinated by the colourful illustrations, which in turn prompted me to ask questions (my father was also keen on history). From Pre-historic Man to the Modern World, a well-written, descriptive narrative on wars, revolutions, rebellions, politics, religion, inventions and the arts... is bound to entertain budding historians of around the age twelve upwards. Each section is followed by a 'Data Digest': a very useful glossary explaining important names, places, words and phrases in more detail. There are books out there which focus more on particular periods or campaigns in history - but Purnell's World History is something general for young readers to get their teeth into. I highly recommend this title for school libraries as it's educative about how our civilization was shaped.
And it still takes pride of place on my overflowing bookshelf!
