1st I would like to agree with some person (can't remember who) that this book is great. It is about the son of a khan of the wolf tribe in Mongolia called Temujin uge.
***spoiler here (though it becomes obvious in the book) Temujin is Genghis khan (which actually means khan of pretty much everything). I would also like to recommend any of David Gemmel's Drenai novels and although this a very childish one, Brian Jaques Redwall books (they're the ones set in a world without humans but with animals that are pretty much human and fight each other with human weapons like swords. The rats stoats wild cats and most of the carnivorous animals are the evil ones that try to invade redwall abby. Its rather strange but fun.
