What first intrigued me about this book was an Entertainment Weekly article by Stephen King saying this was one of the best books nobody was reading. That has definitely changed as book clubs have been picking it up. It's about a boy who falls in love with a book only to later become involved in the mystery surrounding the author, who's disappeared, and the systematic destruction of anything he's ever written. I've heard it compared to Borges and Eco, and I've never heard anyone I've recommended it to read it and not love it.
