As an avid reader of historical fiction, and a devoted follower of Bernard Cornwell's Saxon series, I would recommend "Shadow on the Crown" to others who share this passion -- and I would like to bestow the most stars it's possible to give (5 out of 5 or 10 out of 10) to this book !! Bracewell's "Shadow on the Crown" is the first volume in a planned trilogy, with the second scheduled to appear in stores (and also in audiobook format) next year. Her heroine is Emma of Normandy, who is shipped over to Canterbury in 1002 to marry the King of England. Emma is not one to sit in a corner and knit, and her adventures are the stuff of high drama. Bracewell is a riveting story teller, and a brilliant writer of historical fiction-- she does an extraordinary job of making her medieval characters real to us as she spins her mesmerizing web around her readers with this fascinating tale. I actually first "read" it in the audiobook version on Audible, but loved it so much that I am now
re-reading it in hardcover. I am desperate for the second volume to be published, but must content myself with reading this first volume over and over until that happens in 2015 !
