This true 1917 World War 1 diary of a junior officer only came to light in 1981. It is a vividly written account of experiences through which no-one should have to go . The final chapter deals with the 3rd battle of Ypres and explains why he appeared to write no more.
He survived and was awarded the MC at the battle for the Sambre-Oise canal (where Wilfred Owen was killed). The diary shows a young man growing into a brave and skilled officer who loved his men. Anyone who is not moved to tears by the final chapter....
