(THIS REVIEW BY THE BOOK'S AUTHOR)
Many thanks to Bernard Cornwell, both for allowing me to add my book to this reading club and for the years of joy I have had from reading his novels.
Stronghold is a purely fictional story in which two armies clash, pitting the European fighting style of the late Anglo Saxon Normans against the mounted warriors from the eastern steppes of the same period. The book follows warriors on both sides as the fighting men battle, not only against each other, but against their own inadequate commanders. The war eventually leads both sides to an ancient fortress and a final battle between the champions of the two opposing armies. Behind the warriors Shaman and Mystics on both sides carry out their own secret war of prophesies and manipulation to try and tip the scales of war in their favour. One side battling for the glory of their god, while the other fights for their very survival.
