The sixth book in the series finds Thomas Paine Kydd serving as Fifth Lieutenant in Tenacious on the Canadian station when she is re-assigned to join Admiral the Earl of St Vincent to blockade the Spanish port of Cadiz. There the fleet is joined by Vice Admiral Horation Nelson, and he is put in command of a small squadron, including Tenacious, to re-enter the Mediterranean and discover why Napoleon and his army have sailed from Toulon, and where they are going. Kydd's newly fired ambition finds him volunteering for shore service with the British army in the capture of Minorca, sees him conducting himself with courage at the Battle of the Nile, and finally serving as one of the force defending Acre which inflicted the first defeat of Napoleon's army on land.
