If you are looking for something to fill in the time between Sharpe books, the Alan Lewrie Naval Series, authored by Dewey Lambdin, ( St. Martin Press) will do the trick nicely. The series follows the naval exploits of Alan Lewrie, who rises from Midshipman to Post Captain in 14 books (and counting) that begin in the waning days of the American Revolution and continues through the Napoleonic Wars. Alan Lewrie (ram-cat, as he is nicknamed for a variety of interesting reasons) posses the ingenuity of Hornblower, the tactical expertise of Aubrey, and most importantly, the rogue-like behavior and fighting ability of Sharpe. Some of the early books may be out of print but seem to be available through most library systems. Read the books in chronological order if you can, as many of the colorful characters and exploits carry over from book to book. The writing is excellent, historically accurate, and technically sound, and the battle scenes are written as well as those of Bernard Cornwell.
