THE BLACK SHIP

I read this book in between my usual "Cornwell / Iggulden et al" having been drawn to it on the shelves at a bookshop. Originally written in 1963 it has been re-published by Pen & Sword Maritime. It is the true story of a very bloody mutiny that occurred in 1797 in the West Indies and what subsequently happened to the mutineers over the coming years. It also gives a background to life in the Navy at the time. This is a fascinating story but what makes it particularly amazing is the meticulous research carried out by Dudley Pope and how that research is used. A book that constantly refers to its sources may sometimes become tedious but not in this case. I would go so far as to say that this should be required reading for anyone setting out to research a historical subject.
A wonderful read and I would strongly recommend it.
