For those who enjoyed Bernard's 'The Last Kingdom' and 'The Pale Horseman', here's another excellent novel set in the same time period, against the background of the struggle between the Danish invaders and Alfred the Great in 9th-century England. It's told from the perspective of a young woman, and in graceful prose that's reminiscent of the spare style of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. An excellent read for anyone interested in the period and in King Alfred, and quite different from Bernard's take on the same subject.
