I don't know if Fantasy is your cup of tea, but I enjoy reading it. The books (There are six in the series) have connections with historical events, particularly the crusades and the supremecy/corruption of the church in 16th century Europe, although in a very different setting.
The story centers around Sir Sparhawk a Church Knight, who returns after ten years in exile to find his homeland under the rule of Church Primate Annias (a particularly vile piece of vermin) and the former king poisoned along with the princess heir, who is under his charge to protect. Other members of his order including a styric priestess (somewhat similar in their persecution by christians as jews) have frozen the princess in a diamond keeping her in the exact state before the poison becomes fatal. Sparhawk and his order enter into a battle to cure Elhanna before the spell expires and keep Annias from becoming head of the church. The plot is thickened by the involvement of Martel a renegade of Sparhawk's order who has delved too far into the Styric magical arts and Azash a greater God of Styrictum who chooses this time to begin plans of world domination.
The story itself is solid, and enjoyment enhanced by the quirky wit of the writer which is brought out through the characters themselves. I enjoyed the whole series very much. But not as much as Stonehenge, which is the best book ever!!
