'The Gift' follows the story of Maerad, a slave who was actually born a bard. When Cadvan another bard finds her he is convinced she is the 'fated one' who will triumph over 'Sharma', the root of all evil.
It's part of a series called 'Pellinor' and it was the book that first got me interested in fantasy. Thpugh the main character is a girl and a teenager, the book is an entrancing read, eloquently written with a brilliant story.
P.s Don't be put off by the 'Lord of the Rings' impression you might get from the opening chapters, it is truly original.
