Prompted by my reading of the Sharpe books and their constant and what seems mutual struggle against the French, I picked up this book in a branch of Waterstones. The ensuing tube journey was all to short. Holmes in his mission to strip the mystique from the man that 'was not always good, but was unquestionably great' only succeeds in making us see that the man was immense and did indeed stand astride this country like the colossus of legend. An amazing read.
