This book starts with 1066 when "a jumped up little Norman and his bunch of psycopaths" invade England and basically change the consequent history of the Western world. The difference is, this is told from the losers side. It follows Walt, King Harold's only surviving body guard, dealing with his search for forgiveness, as he believes he abandoned his King, the last English king, merely by failing to die by his side.
This book is written in a purposely slightly anachronistic style to give the flavour of common speech etc. so anyone bothered by that or by 'naughty' bits - don't bother to read this! For anyone else, it's an amusing and touching look at what happens after the final battle, and a larger than text book account of Saxon/Norman history.
