THE LONG SHIPS

One of the best novels (and WORST movies) about the Viking age. The narrative style is very much that of a Norse saga as the book unfolds the life of Red Orm as he voyages to the lands of the Moors and the Rus in search of treaure and tries to keep the peace on his farm at home despite randy priests and (literally) berserk farm hands.
Although it seems to be out of print, there are plenty of cheap used copies out there (or you can get it from either Amazon site).
