THE LORD OF THE RINGS

I know this is not the sort of book that most lovers of Cornwell would usually read, just as the Sharpe series is not the sort of book I would normally be drawn to (though I absolutely adore them, they are quickly becoming my favourite books and I have started reading more of this style.) But The Lord of the Rings is a classic trilogy, and Tolkien is a master storyteller. Not only is this classic tale a wonderful read in its own right, but Tolkien has created an entire history for his world, as well as complex languages and maps, some of which is in the Appendices of Return of the King (the third book) and the rest of this history can be found in the Silmarillion(I found the Sil a difficult read as it is written almost in the style of a bible, completely different to the style of Lord of the Rings, but it is the best way to learn the history of Tolkien's Middle Earth)

The Trilogy itself has such wonderful characters, and the landscape is described in such a way you can almost touch it. I have loved these books since I was 12 years old and I recommend them to anyone. The order to read them in is: "The Fellowship of the Ring", "The Two Towers", and "The Return of the King" I would recommend reading the children's book "The Hobbit" first, it provides some background to the events in the trilogy, but don't let it put you off the Lord of the Rings as it is written in an entirely different style than the trilogy, and it is very much a children's book, while the others are not. I apologise for rambling, I could sing the praises of these books for pages.)
