The Name of the Wind is a fantastic fantasy novel set in a medieval-ish world. But Rothfuss' writing makes it feel much more than that. The story and world is unique and really forces you to imagine, not at all looking like an inspired rendition of Tolkien's fantasy work.
The book follows the story of Kvothe (pronounced "quothe") who strives to be something more in the bleak and tough environment that surrounds him. He wishes to be an Arcanist, coveted individuals who perform great magical feats. But Kvothe is also burdened by his own sole objective... to finally discover the murderers of all he loved. But that too is also quite a challenge, for the killers are strangely elusive and not at all what they seem to be...
Overall, the Name of the Wind is a very good tale full of magic, adventure, tragedy, and swordplay. It may not be historical fiction, but I highly enjoyed it and I'm sure lots of you will appreciate it as well. It's certainly the best fantasy novel I have read in a while...
